The painting department can be found on the fifth floor of SCAD Atlanta. First-year students in all programs build their basic skills by taking foundation studies classes, which teach them how to handle materials through a variety of traditional painting classes. Through these classes, students acquire the tools and techniques necessary to develop their painting skills. Upperclassmen are encouraged and challenged to develop their personal vision, as well as to learn to work in a style and medium that suits their artistic interests. All styles and methods are encouraged.

The large classrooms and small average class sizes allow for individual attention from professors.

Classrooms at SCAD are set up for a variety of learning exercises, like live models, still life and other configurations.

Large rooms allow students to work freely and are equipped with projectors and computers to access outside resources.

Students use a variety of materials and techniques, from oil- and water-based media to mixed and alternative media.

SCAD Atlanta is located in midtown Atlanta, which offers a diverse music scene and numerous theaters, galleries and museums.
