Built in 1920 in the Georgian Revival Style, Arnold Hall was erected as the 35th Street Junior High School, and in 1935 it became the first Chatham County public high school. The building was named for Richard Arnold, five-time Savannah mayor and an architect of the Georgia public school system, who had been instrumental in negotiating the safe surrender of the city of Savannah to General Sherman in 1864. Arnold Hall was reconstructed by SCAD in 2008, and is home to many of the School of Liberal Arts programs. Students in these programs experience a comprehensive education that allows them to embark on careers in architectural research, heritage consulting, film archiving, exhibition coordinating, publishing, editing, public relations, copywriting, and journalism.
