  1. Pre-registration is required. To register, SCAD students should register via MySCAD April 1-27. Registration ends at noon, Wednesday, April 27.
  2. Only current SCAD students can pre-register. High school students and SCAD alumni will register the day of the event at their respective tents.
  3. Graduate students must indicate they are a graduate student during registration to be entered into the graduate student competition (squares 1-45). Graduate students are also able to participate in the general competition and select any square. However, they will only be a part of the competition if they register for squares 1-45.
  4. Participants must print their chalk coupon after registering online and present it at the chalk distribution tent (see map for tent's location). Chalk distribution begins at 10 a.m. A map, which is available at the chalk distribution tent, directs artists to their squares.
  5. Students working in groups are judged in the group competition. Group participants are assigned one square per participant (but no more than three squares) and receive one box of chalk per square. There are no limitations on the number of group members. Groups must register through MySCAD at the same time and must register for consecutive squares. Groups registered for non-consecutive squares will be required to re-register.
  6. Artists must pick up their chalk by noon the day of the event to ensure that they do not lose their squares to participants on standby.
  7. Participants may begin at 11 a.m. Artists are encouraged to begin promptly to ensure that they have time to complete quality work before the judging begins at 2 p.m.
  8. Each drawing must remain within the designated square area.
  9. No spray fixatives may be used. Participants must use only the chalk distributed for the competition. Only one box will be provided for each square.
  10. Participants are not permitted to draw on buildings, trees or any surfaces other than their assigned squares.
  11. The primary design of a square must be created in chalk. No materials may be used that emit offensive odors or cause potential annoyances to other participants or festival goers.
  12. Three-dimensional elements may be incorporated into square designs; however, additions must not exceed the square area and may be no taller than two feet. Three-dimensional elements must be removed by the artist no later than 5 p.m.
  13. The festival is a family event. Therefore, any artwork that contains nudity, profanity or other content deemed inappropriate by festival officials will be removed.
  14. Judging begins at 2 p.m., and results are announced at approximately 4 p.m.
  15. Winning squares are selected by a panel of guest judges.
  16. Only students who pre-register for the competition will be eligible to receive prize money.
  17. After the results are announced, winners are asked to remain at the stage area so that photos may be taken.
  18. Participants may be disqualified by judges or festival officials for failure to adhere to any of the above guidelines.
