STUDENTS:
YOUR TIME IS NOW
For years, you've worked hard to gain valuable experience and develop an impressive portfolio. Now is your chance to capitalize on the knowledge and skills you have acquired while studying and creating at SCAD. More than 100 top companies will be seeking candidates for a wide range of art and design jobs at the SCAD Career Fair 2013. Take advantage of this opportunity to land the job of your dreams.
PREPARE TO SUCCEED
The key to a successful experience at the SCAD Career Fair is coming prepared. You'll have limited time to interact with executives and recruiters, so knowing whom you want to meet and what you want to communicate is vital. We have some tips to help you make an immediate and lasting impression.
CREATE YOUR SCAD PORTFOLIO
SCAD has partnered with Behance to provide you with a free online portfolio. The office for career and alumni success will be encouraging employers who register for the Career Fair to preview the work of talented SCAD students and alumni on Behance.
If you already have a Behance portfolio but are not a member of SCAD's gallery, ensure your work appears on it by joining now. If you have developed your own website, you can include the link in your SCAD portfolio.
PREPARATION WORKSHOPS
Participate in a career and alumni success workshop to learn what you can do to prepare for the SCAD Career Fair 2013. For more information, browse the complete list of Career Fair workshops.
TAKE INVENTORY
Consider your strengths, your relevant skills, your goals, the companies you are interested in and your desired career path within those companies. Prepare your "elevator pitch" or "one-minute commercial," and come prepared to sell yourself.
POLISH PORTFOLIO
Prepare your résumé, portfolio and/or work samples. Get feedback on the quality of your portfolio and recommended areas of improvement. If you need assistance in preparing your résumé, email the office for career and alumni success at SCAD, or use the online Tool Kit.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Understand how your talent and skills relate to what the employers are looking for in candidates. Develop those skills that you are lacking. Thoroughly research your target companies and gather background information so you can conduct impressive conversations with company representatives.
WHAT TO BRING
Prepare several copies of your résumé — enough for all employers with whom you want to talk with, plus a few extras. Bring your portfolio, leave-behind pieces, writing samples and a list of references.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Dress as if you were going to a job interview. You want to present the best image possible. Jeans and other casual clothing are not appropriate. Avoid excessive makeup, jewelry and perfume. You will only have a few minutes to make an impression on each employer, and positive first impressions are critical.
BE FLEXIBLE
Arrive early and have a strategy, but keep your options and your mind open. Lines will be longer for some employers than they will be for others. Ask yourself if your time would be better spent visiting with six different companies or standing in line for one.
EXPLORE OFFERINGS
Don't limit your opportunities due to lack of information or effort. You may want to walk though the entire SCAD Career Fair and make contact with all the participating organizations to learn more about them and what they have to offer.
MAKE AN IMPRESSION
Introduce yourself to company representatives in a positive and confident manner; offer a firm handshake. Include your name, degree, major, the year you graduated from SCAD and any subsequent relevant experience.
HAVE A PLAN
You will not have a lot of time with each prospective employer; don't waste it. Get to the point and know what you want to say or ask. For example:
- Discuss a particular career or job with that organization.
- Ask about common career paths within an organization.
- Ask about training for new hires.
Present your résumé and be prepared to discuss your background, qualifications and career goals. Ask what you should do to apply for a position with them.
EXCHANGE INFO
Make sure to give your business card and ask for the business card of the people you meet. Collect literature about the company if available. Ask the representatives when you can expect to hear back from them.
TAKE NOTES
After each booth visit, take a moment to write a quick note about your visit. Write down your thoughts about the company and the person you met with, how you think you did and what you could have done better. If you said you would do something, make a note of it so you don't forget.
FOLLOW UP
Immediately following the SCAD Career Fair, make a point to follow up with a letter or handwritten note to the person you met with. Reiterate your interest in the company and the specific job you interviewed for. You might want to include another copy of your résumé or speak to something specific that was discussed in the meeting that will help them remember you. Thank them for their time.
