With the ever-growing popularity, ease and accessibility to the photographic medium, it progressively becomes more of a challenge to transcend the preconceived notions of being a contemporary photographer. As an artist who has come to photography from drawing and painting, I have found the challenge of using photography alluring. My draw to use the photographic medium as art is tied to the idea of the ability to create a fiction that a casual viewer would take as truth; this thought deriving from the photograph's history of acting as documentation. Conversely, with the progress of digital photography and Photoshop, photographs now become questioned as untruthful, photo manipulations. With my photographs I strive for images that challenge both ideas of truthful documentation and photo manipulation. Constructing sculpture specifically for the camera, using Photoshop errors to create painterly imagery, using time-specific signifiers to disjoint viewers into misinterpretation, my overall intention is for viewers to question my images against what they know photography to be. Inviting a desire to seek what the truth there is behind my photographs … if there is any.

Statement
I recently finished a series of pictures that were about seeing the world with a heightened sense of visual awareness and cultivating that as a way of seeing. While it certainly was about that specific body of work, I'm realizing that working methodology is an overarching ethos in anything I work on.

Statement
My introduction to Sham Shui Po was a bewildering, cacophonous roar of visual information and clutter. I inherently sought to isolate the events, characters and daily life of the district so as to better understand the parts that make up the whole. From what is said of Sham Shui Po by long-time, local residents, one may get the impression that it's a derelict, stagnant place that has little to offer in terms of cultural and economic value. During my six-month study, I learned that the opposite is true. The dense, overwhelming environment that otherwise discourages a casual tourist from exploring, requires further investigation; a superficial summation can be all that one finds if the time isn't taken to better understand Sham Shui Po. Through this process of simplifying and distilling what was around me, I was able to find singular objects and moments that represent the true character of the neighborhood: a place representative of unabashed human nature that is beautiful because of its visceral quality.

I am a curious voyeur. I would keep a diary if my writing could accurately describe what I see and experience. Since this is not the case, I use a camera to record and document my world. These images represent the things that I want to remember.

Statement
The atmosphere of Sham Shui Po, much like that of Hong Kong in general, is one of ever-present change. To photograph this part of the city is to have documents that reflect the old Hong Kong, an area full of vestiges of the colonial era, traditional shop stalls and markets, and a culture that is quickly disappearing into the modern skyscrapers and shopping malls that are creeping into the landscape. I photograph the architecture and the street culture at night. The colors given from the mix of neon and the 24-hour commotion provide a vivid context of Sham Shui Po, which is never static.

Statement
In my photography I strive to capture the social landscape, the energy of an urban environment. When I photograph in the street, I'm looking for the serendipitous moments that create mini-stories. Stories inspired by gestures, expressions and incidental details of the urban activity. A photograph is a small slice of time, which cannot be repeated; I am looking to shoot those inherent moments of life on the streets. Photographing on the street is interesting, unpredictable and ultimately poignant. It embodies and reveals much about who we are because everyone has a story.

Statement
Much of my work takes form as architectural photography. Whether I am capturing interiors or exteriors, I devote my attention to highlighting the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of the space. Often void of people, the focus of my work falls on the spaces themselves--their decoration, construction and purpose. The ambiance and oddities of the spaces, such as funeral homes and hospitals, sparks questions about the commodifcation of death and the homogenization of health care. In newer bodies of work I document advertisements in their viewing context, photographing them to show how their intended messages are often compromised by their placement within urban environments.

Statement
I came to Hong Kong to work on this project specifically as a member of the team documenting the historic buildings in Sham Shui Po. These buildings stand as a testament to the origins of the district and are soon to be demolished in favor of shopping centers and high rises, in effect permanently removing the traces of Sham Shui Po's past. The architecture of the Tong Lau's and Pawn Shops stand out amidst the crowded buildings because of their intricate details. I am grateful I had the opportunity to come and document them before they are lost forever.

Statement
I make art as a commentary on my experiences in life. Sometimes the photograph is staged, sometimes it is of something I find, and other times it is a self portrait. I have always been intrigued by truth and it's relationship to photography. One should never trust a photograph to tell the whole truth. Yet, in my photographs I present to you a piece of a truth (how I see the world).
