The SCAD exhibitions department presents "Six in One: SCAD in New American Paintings," a group exhibition featuring work by alumni whose national exposure has put them at the forefront of current painting practices. The six artists on view in this exhibition - which will be displayed concurrently at the Atlanta and Savannah locations - were recently featured in the 88th edition of "New American Paintings," the acclaimed juried exhibition-in-print journal. Artists include Misty Bennett (B.F.A., painting, 1996), Caomin Xie (M.F.A., painting, 2001), Meredith Pardue (B.F.A., painting, 1998), M.F.A. painting student Michael Porten (B.F.A., illustration, 2004), Katherine Sandoz (M.F.A., painting, 2005; M.F.A., illustration, 1997), and Chris Scarborough (B.F.A., illustration, 2000). Free and open to the public, this event is part of the SCAD 2011 deFINE ART program.

ARTIST BIOS

 
Misty Bennett
Misty Bennett earned an M.F.A in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia in 2002 and a B.F.A (cum laude) in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1996. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Space 301, Mobile, Alabama, 2009; Amanda Schedler Fine Art, Birmingham, Alabama, 2009; and Caladan Gallery(online), 2008. She had a solo exhibition at Vandiver Gallery, Anderson University, South Carolina, in 2008. Bennett's work is in the University of Montevallo collection and the President's Collection, University of Georgia. She has held an artist-in-residency at the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a number of awards and grants, and was featured in New American Paintings. Bennett is an associate professor of art at the University of Montevallo and lives in Montevallo, Alabama.
Meredith Pardue
Meredith Pardue earned an M.F.A in painting from Parsons the New School for Design in 2003 and a B.F.A in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1998. She has been included in a number of solo and two-person exhibitions at Laura Rathe Fine Art, Houston, Texas (upcoming); Jean-Marc Fray, Austin, Texas, 2010; Judith Costello Gallery, Hilton Head, South Carolina, 2010; and others. Pardue's work has been published in House Beautiful, Dwell magazine, New American Paintings and Southern Living. It is included in corporate collections of Trust Bank, Monroe, Louisiana; Iberia Bank, Baton Rouge; Northern Trust Bank, New York, New York; Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia; and University of Louisiana, Monroe, Louisiana. Pardue lives and works in Austin, Texas.
Michael Porten
Michael Porten earned a B.F.A. in illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004 and is working towards an M.F.A. in painting from SCAD. Porten has had recent solo exhibitions at Hall Street Gallery, Savannah, Georgia, 2008; and Galeries de l'Olivier, Lacoste, France, 2009. His work has also been included in recent group exhibitions at Late Show Gallery, Kansas City, Missouri, 2008; Miami Art Basel Satellite Fair (ARTery Art Fair), Miami, Florida, 2009; and SCAD Gallery, Hong Kong, 2010.
Katherine Sandoz
Katherine Sandoz earned an M.F.A in painting in 2005 and an M.F.A in illustration in 1997 from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and a B.A in French and international relations from Mount Holyoke College in 1991. Sandoz has had solo exhibitions at EOS, Savannah, Georgia, 2009; Rosewood Contemporary Art, Savannah, 2007; and Kim Iocovozzi Fine Art, Savannah, 2005. Sandoz's work has been included in group shows at dkGallery, Marietta, Georgia, 2010; SCAD Gallery, Hong Kong, 2010; and Oglethorpe Gallery, Savannah, 2010. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, Antiques and the Arts Weekly, and Art in America. She won an Honorable Mention from the 12th Annual Telfair Art Fair in 2006 and was the featured artist of the month for shopSCAD. She lives and works in Savannah.
Chris Scarborough
Chris Scarborough earned a B.F.A. in illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2000. He has shown work in solo and two-person exhibitions at AVA, Chattanooga, Tennessee, 2010; Sewanee: The University of the South, Tennessee, 2010; Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia, 2009; and Curator's Office, Washington D.C., 2009. Scarborough's work has been included in group shows at Bold Hype Gallery, Orlando, Florida, 2010; Watkins College of Art, Nashville, Tennessee, 2010; and Copro Nason Gallery, Santa Monica, California, 2009. His work is included in the collections of Lipscomb University, Tennessee State Museum, 21C Museum, and The Tullman Collection. Scarborough's work has been featured in Intro Magazine, NY Arts, ART PAPERS and New American Paintings. He lives and works in Nashville.
Caomin Xie
Caomin Xie earned an M.F.A from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2001 and a B.F.A from the China Academy of Art in 1998. He has been included in solo exhibitions at Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, New York, New York, 2008; Gallery 55, Shanghai, China, 2006; and Rx Gallery, San Francisco, California, 2005. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, China, 2008; Red Gallery, Savannah, Georgia, 2007; Galerie Barthe and Senarclens, Geneva, Switzerland, 2007; and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., 2006. Xie lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.
