Gail Frederickson Exhibition: "The Real and the Ideal: An Investigation in Natural Pattern Design Through Painting and Fiber Techniques"
Oct. 11 – Oct. 25, 2011
Hall Street Gallery | 212 W. Hall St., Savannah, Ga.
The SCAD exhibitions department presents "The Real and the Ideal: An Investigation in Natural Pattern Design Through Painting and Fiber Techniques," an exhibition by M.F.A. fibers student Gail Frederickson. Through deep investigations into the reasoning behind nature's primary influence on art and aesthetics, scientific and mathematical laws have begun to reveal themselves; Frederickson's art derives from these concepts. Known as the divine proportion, golden spiral and natural selection, these laws illustrate that beauty is not just based on opinion but is fixed in our genetic makeup. This attraction to specific forms supports our need for an ordered environment in which we unknowingly live, whose rules we abide by. Through artistic means, Frederickson's work aims to reflect this order and beauty through a type of art botany, where the illustrations of vegetation remain unedited. By allowing the imperfections to remain in the work, a real or lively quality becomes present in each piece. In this time of the overly edited and technological production of flat images and pattern, Frederickson's work aims to reintroduce traditional design, in a way that reflects the state of our natural environment.
