SCAD Showcases Motion Painting Exhibition by David Ellis

10/6/2006

The Savannah College of Art and Design presents "Dawn's Early Light," a multimedia exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist David Ellis, on display through Nov. 12 at Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St., Savannah, Ga. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Ellis' exhibitions have appeared throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. His pieces feature motion painting with diverse objects, from trucks to analog drum machines, incorporating graffiti-inspired painting.

In July 2005, Ellis was commissioned by SCAD President Paula S. Wallace to paint a SCAD delivery truck for exhibition. Ellis continually painted and repainted from sunrise to sunset for five consecutive days under the Boundary Street bridge. He and a group of students set up a multi-camera shot to create a new motion painting video titled "Bound," which premiered at Red Gallery.

Ellis was born in Raleigh, N.C., and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting in 1993 from The Cooper Union in New York City. He is the founding member of legendary painting collective the Barnstorms. In 2004, he created a video piece titled "Paint on Trucks in a World in Need of Love" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which accounts his unique style of painting on trucks.

His public art projects can be seen on industrial buildings in Brooklyn, tobacco barns in Cameron, N.C., and on the exteriors of Mo Jo Trucking vehicles. Ellis’ work has been featured in ID, Paper, Artforum and Flash Art magazines.

A contemporary retail space, Red Gallery features the work of prominent artists alongside that of emerging Savannah College of Art and Design alumni. Regular hours are Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, 1–4 p.m. For more information, call 912.525.4735.
