SCAD Displays Britt Spencer's Greek Mythology Illustrations With Contemporary Twist

11/3/2006

Savannah College of Art and Design alumnus Britt Spencer (B.F.A., illustration, 2005) provides cultural critiques in his new exhibition, "Mythillogical," on display Nov. 3–28 at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., Savannah, Ga.

Spencer's work in the exhibition conflates mythical images with social and political critiques.

In images such as “Almighty Zeus” (right), alumnus Britt Spencer examines ways mythology defines entire cultures.
"The show itself is about the asinine nature of mythology and how it can support an entire culture," he said. "Due to this, what parallels can we draw about our own society? In short, it's a show that uses myth to justify the collaboration between nonsense and reason."

Spencer, a native of Lexington, Ky., studied child psychology and worked as a guidance counselor at a boys’ camp before deciding to pursue an illustration degree at SCAD.

During his time at the college, Spencer earned numerous awards and accolades, including being named best in show at the 2004 Sidewalk Arts Festival and, in 2005, placing second in the group competition and earning the Gray's Reef Fantastic Fishes Award for best underwater scene. He also placed second in the SCAD Society of Illustrators' "Defined" exhibition in 2004 and in the college's 2002 foundation studies exhibition and competition for drawing.

In 2004, he created the winning design for the Savannah Music Festival poster competition, was a finalist in the Teatrio "Circus" children’s book competition and received second place in the Merriwell Children's Book Competition. His work has appeared in numerous children’s books and on posters throughout the world, and he has been recognized by the New York Society of Illustrators.

Spencer works as a freelance illustrator and lives in Savannah with his wife and three children. For more information and to view additional images of his work, visit www.brittspencer.com.
