"Contemporary Cartoonists" Highlights Sequential Art at SCAD

11/3/2006 The Savannah College of Art and Design presents "Contemporary Cartoonists," a group exhibition featuring pieces by professional sequential artists, including SCAD alumni, Nov. 3–30 at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 324 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Savannah, Ga. The event is free and open to the public.The exhibition allows students and the community to view sequential artists from across the country. Among the artists displaying their work are Paola Rivera, a painter for Marvel Comics, and Mark Schultz, a former visiting artist to SCAD who has been cartooning and illustrating for more than 20 years and is best known for the award-winning speculative adventure comic book "Xenozoic Tales." SCAD sequential art alumni included in the exhibition are Tracy Yardley (B.F.A., 2001), current pencil artist for Archie Comics' "Sonic the Hedgehog"; Phil Craven (M.F.A., 2002), Dreamworks SKG storyboard artist; and Nick Dragotta (B.F.A., 1997), whose work can be seen in Marvel and DC Comics. SCAD is one of few institutions to offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in sequential art, which encompasses comic books, graphic novels, comic strips, children's books, and storyboards for animation and film.
