10/7/2005 SAVANNAH, GA. — The Savannah College of Art and Design announced today the opening of Slater Bradley’s exhibition “Lifetime Achievement Award” at Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St., Oct. 7. The exhibition is free and open to the public.“Slater Bradley is an internationally recognized emerging young artist,” said Matthew Mascotte, assistant curator for the college’s exhibitions department. “His work has shown all over the world, most recently at the Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art. This exhibition will feature brand new videos from the artist.” ”Lifetime Achievement Award” showcases seven single-channel videos created by Bradley between 1999 and the present. Highlights include “The Year of the Doppelganger” and “Intermission.” Bradley’s latest work from his ongoing “Doppelganger” series and the American premier of “The Land of Artistic Expression,” a piece he created on Sept. 11, 2001, also will be featured. “Popular culture and the cult of celebrity are recurring themes explored in Bradley’s videos,” said Mascotte. “Often he employs handheld camera techniques, using amateur quality digital video and Super 8 film equipment. He questions how the current aesthetic of our increasingly digitalized lives have begun to be misconstrued as the real thing.” The New York-based Bradley has had one person shows in Berlin, London, Geneva, San Francisco, Basel as well as in New York. His “Doppelganger” series is work from the past four years where Bradley enlisted the help of Benjamin Brock, a friend who looks very much like him, to create a body of imposter images and videos.“Occupying space between lived life and learned life, between real life and the fictive, Bradley’s ‘Doppelganger’ series measures the distance from experience to its representation,” Mascotte said. “This exhibition promises to be engaging for all who attend.” This exhibition will be highlighted during the college’s Oct. 7 gallery hop.
