SCAD-Atlanta welcomes Allan deSouza

10/3/2007

Allan deSouza Everything West of Here is Indian Country, 2003 C-print, 50,8 x 127 cm Courtesy of the artist and Talwar Gallery, NY.

ATLANTA
— The Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta will host Allan deSouza’s presentation of “Rituals in Transfigured Time” Oct. 3, 7-8 p.m., at 1600 Peachtree St. This event is free and open to the public.

DeSouza is a Kenya-born mixed media and photo-conceptual artist whose work focuses on intersections of the body, collective identities and social space. His writing has appeared in various artist catalogues, journals and anthologies. He is an assistant professor in new genres at the San Francisco Art Institute, and is represented by Talwar Gallery, New York City.

Paraphrasing the title of Maya Deren’s 1946 film, deSouza talks about his explorations of the marginalized body and social space. His photographs, as well as performances, sculptures and “paintings” made from domestic and bodily materials such as fingernails and hair, use humor and forensic techniques to “record” the racialized, gendered body in ways that suggest ritual or fetish.
