SCAD Presents "Etchings of Rembrandt"

8/31/2006

RembrandtThe Savannah College of Art and Design celebrates the 400-year anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth by presenting "Etchings of Rembrandt" Aug. 31–Sept. 25 at the Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St. The exhibition includes 40 etchings by Rembrandt for sale ranging in price from $8,000-$150,000. The exhibition is free and open to the public and will be featured on the Sept. 15 gallery hop, 5–7 p.m.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) was a Dutch baroque artist who ranks as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. He possessed a profound understanding of human nature that was matched by a brilliant technique — not only in painting but in drawing and etching — and his work made an enormous impact on his contemporaries and influenced the style of many later artists.

Rembrandt's etchings were internationally renowned even during his lifetime. He exploited the etching process for its unique potential, using scribbling strokes to produce extraordinarily expressive lines. In combination with etching he employed the drypoint needle, achieving special effects with the burr in his mature graphic work. Indeed, Rembrandt's most impressive etchings date from his mature period.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Gary Schwartz, the world's leading Rembrandt expert, will be presenting a lecture titled "Reintroducing Rembrandt," Sept. 21, 7 p.m., at the Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. Schwartz studied art history at New York University and Johns Hopkins University. In 1965 he moved to the Netherlands, where he has been active as an art historian, translator, writer and publisher. A regular contributor to magazines and newspapers in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States, Schwartz is the author of the soon-to-be-released "The Rembrandt Book," which explores Rembrandt’s life and art from biographical and art historical perspectives. The lecture is free and open to the public and Schwartz will be available to sign copies of "The Rembrandt Book" after the lecture.
