SCAD presents Gregory Eltringham exhibition

8/27/2007

SCAD, Savannah, Gregory Eltringham, painting, Take the Burden Exhibition, 2007, Chair, Painting Department
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Take the Burden,” a solo painting  exhibition by SCAD foundation studies professor Gregory Eltringham exploring the everyday interaction of individuals within their allotted spaces, Aug. 27 – Oct. 7, at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St. Eltringham, who will transition to chair of the college’s painting department in September, has shown artwork nationally since 1992. The subjects in his new series take precedence over an ambiguous background where their expressive actions create narrative intrigue. “It's really about time and circumstance; where we are born, or when, is not something we choose,” Eltringham said. “We have the immediate world we live in — our home, family, friends, etc. — but also we have the rest of the world going on around us that we either experience directly by venturing outside our shell, or through the media.”

“This may seem very serious, but at the core of the work there is a humor that can not be overlooked,” continued Eltringham. “It's a reminder in a way that life is short and we should enjoy ourselves while we are here.”
Eltringham earned a Diploma in Illustration from The Art Institute of Boston, a B.A. in art from Northeastern University and an M.F.A. in painting from SCAD. He was an adjunct professor and gallery director at Broward Community College in Davie, Fla., and was associate professor of art in at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Mo., before returning to SCAD in 2005. He is represented by galleries in Atlanta, Kansas City and New Orleans.  Eltringham lives in Savannah with his wife Angela Burson (SCAD, B.F.A., painting, 1991), and their two children.
