David Ellis: A Five-day Public Painting Display

7/18/2005 SAVANNAH, GA. — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents a five-day public painting display by New York artist David Ellis, July 18–22, 5 a.m.–9 p.m., outside Working Class Studio, 233 W. Boundary St. Ellis will continuously paint and repaint a SCAD delivery truck, in keeping with his recent work of painting trucks in graffiti-inspired style. The painting display is free and open to the public. On July 20, 21 and 22, the last three evenings of Ellis’ painting display, SCAD will hold barbecues from 6–8 p.m., and will provide musical entertainment with live D.J.s and bands. The barbecues and entertainment are free and open to the public. In conjunction with his painting display, Ellis will lecture about his work and show a time-lapsed video chronicling his work in Savannah, Monday, July 25, 7 p.m., in the Alexander Hall auditorium, 668 Indian St. The lecture is free and open to the public. Ellis was born in Raleigh, N.C., and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting in 1993 from Cooper Union in New York City. The founding member of legendary painting collective the Barnstormers!, Ellis has extensively exhibited his work in cities such as New York, Tokyo and San Francisco. In 2004, he created a video piece titled “Paint on Trucks in a World in Need of Love” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which accounts his unique style of painting on trucks. Ellis’ public art projects can be seen on industrial buildings in Brooklyn, N.Y., tobacco barns in Cameron, N.C., and on the exteriors of Mo Jo Trucking vehicles. His work has been featured in ID, Paper, Art Forum and Flash Art magazines.
