"Parade"

7/13/2004

parade PARIS — More than 60 giant dragons, flying fish, "cages" of tulles and other costumes full of explosive colors will invade the Piazza of the Pompidou Center on Wednesday, July 7, 2–4 p.m.

Presented by the Savannah College of Art and Design, "Parade" on the Piazza of the Pompidou Center is a preview of the exhibition “Parade,” July 13–Aug. 28, at the Mona Bismarck Foundation, 34, avenue of New York, Paris, France. The exhibition is free and open to the public Tuesday–Saturday, 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m.

Parade 1 “Parade” is comprised of original, brightly colored, formalistic costumes made from alternative materials, such as rolls of DuPont Tyvek, paint, paper, fabric and wood. These wearable works of art come together in a parade as a joyous progression of figures from one point to another. The exhibition will also feature photography by renowned fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

"Parade" pays homage to the 1917 Russian Ballet of the same name whose cubist costumes by Picasso caused such a delightful scandal. The concept of artists Karen McVay Butch and Martha Enzmann is abstract and futuristic, but the procession is designed like a celebration, in a light and merry mood, with amusing and spiritual costumes.

"Parade" on the Piazza of the Pompidou Center will feature more than 60 costumes in a choreographed Paradeprocession led by bassoonist Dr. Jeffrey Lyman. Lyman, an associate professor of bassoon at Arizona State University who is renowned for his unique style of music, has traveled the world performing in countless solo and group performances.
