Craig Drennan: "Supergirl Project"

5/2/2006

Craig DrennanATLANTA — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “The Supergirl Project,” a series of drawing, painting, sculpture and audio work by SCAD painting professor Craig Drennan at the Savannah Gallery, 3096 Roswell Road, May 2–June 17.

The movie “Supergirl” was the inspiration for Drennan’s art. “I like the idea of making drawings about a film, especially a Hollywood film,” he said. “‘Supergirl’ was not a success and has been submerged beneath an ocean of subsequent output. Helen Slater, who played the title role, has become somewhat of a zombie, half celebrity and half mortal. I don’t have the money or resources to make a feature length film, but I can re-code an existing film according to my own agenda. In the end, I try to make interesting artwork from a failed film.”

Drennan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in interdisciplinary studies from Glenville State College and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and history from Ohio University. He recently held a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Fireproof Gallery in New York City, and his work has been included in the Scope New York, New Art Dealers Alliance and ARCO art fairs. Drennan has also been a speaker for “A User’s Guide to Modern and Contemporary Art,” a lecture series at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.
