Tim Prentice: "Kinetic Sculpture"

3/30/2006

Tim Prentice Exhibition 2006By Natalie Bray

SAVANNAH, GA. — Tim Prentice's "Kinetic Sculpture" exhibition at Red Gallery is comprised of a large selection of interior installation works that respond to the organic, whimsical and unpredictable ways in which air moves. The sculptures, created from aluminum, stainless steel, and Lexan, are hung from the ceiling, attached to the walls and extended in layers from every angle. It is ironic that the rigid, hard industrial materials produce such palpably soft, fluid, complex movement and sound. The stiff backbone structures of the works are tense and poised for action, while the fluid grace of the paper-thin aluminum pieces, delicately balanced on hooks, makes for a harmony of opposing elements.

Prentice earned a Master of Architecture degree from Yale and later established a studio in Cornwall, Conn., to design and fabricate kinetic sculpture. In the last few years, Prentice has completed installations in Japan, Korea, Northern Ireland and Australia. Prentice’s corporate clients include American Express, Bank of America, Exxon Mobil, AT&T and Hewlett-Packard. He shows with Maxwell Davidson Gallery in New York. Ephemeral, abstract and rhythmic, Prentice's solo exhibition touches upon ideas of systems, symmetry and pattern. His work is a beautiful feat of engineering suggestive of his background in architecture, sailing, imaginative artistic practice and the curiosity and playfulness of a child.
