3/3/2006 SAVANNAH, GA. — The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “DO NOT BE AFRAID of the Flotsam,” the culminating event of visiting artist John Bjerklie’s residence with SCAD’s painting department. The exhibition runs March 3–27 at La Galerie Bleue, 3515 Montgomery St., and is free and open to the public. The show is a collaboration spearheaded by Bjerklie and two groups of Master of Fine Arts painting students who acted as his assistants in creating a sculpture park in a deserted landfill on Hutchinson Island. The show will serve both as a conclusion to the project, and as a recreation of the project in a gallery setting, in order to make the experience accessible to an audience. Bjerklie has been a visiting artist at SCAD for winter quarter. Bjerklie has exhibited his work nationally and internationally for over two decades. His work includes painting, sculpture, collaborative installations and transparent drawings executed directly onto television screens. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art and an M.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Bjerklie has shown with Lennon,Weinberg Gallery, Aubase Gallery and Parker’s Box in New York City. He has also shown with Neville-Sargent Gallery in Chicago, Elliot Smith Gallery in St. Louis, and Gallery du Tableau in Marseilles, France. His work was included in the 1998 Tenri Biennale in Japan where he was the Doyusha Prize winner. He is currently an independent artist in Brooklyn and the managing director for the Triangle Artists’ Residency Program in New York City. Watch an On Demand video about this exhibition.
