2/10/2005 SAVANNAH, GA. — The Savannah College of Art and Design is bringing the pop art movement to Savannah in early February with the visit of world-renowned contemporary collector and author Richard Weisman. Weisman will show selections from his personal collection, including several pieces from Andy Warhol’s “Athlete’s Series, 1977–1978.” Feb. 10–14 at the Pinnacle Gallery.Weisman was part of the Warhol Factory in the 1970s and commissioned the artist to created the “Athletes Series.” Because Warhol was not familiar with sports figures, Weisman chose each of Warhol’s subjects from his circle of friends. The 10 portraits in the series (including Muhammad Ali, Dorothy Hamill, Pelé, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chris Evert, Jack Nicklaus and O.J. Simpson) now exceed $3 million in total value. According to Weisman, his collection grew out of his appreciation for art, not the work’s potential value. He grew up in a family of art collectors as the son of Marcia Weisman, founder of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and nephew of Norton Simon, founder of the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, Calif.
