"Forgotten Territory" exhibition remembers victims of trans-Atlantic slave trade

2/2/2007

Monica, Lynn, James, Long Ago, Forgotten Territory Exhibition 2007Paintings resurrecting forgotten African-American artifacts, sites and stories from the trans-Atlantic slave trade will be on display Feb. 2–28 at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St. Savannah, GA. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Monica Lynn James (M.F.A., painting, 2005) was inspired to create "Forgotten Territory" while researching Shockoe Bottom, a slave trading center in the United States that sold more than 350,000 people of African descent between 1790 and 1859.

"Thousands of people were sold, families were torn apart, and lives and spirits were destroyed," James said. "Relics of amazing stories of survival and resolve wait to be unearthed. This is a forgotten territory I hope to resurrect through this series."

James began her search reading "The Defender," a newspaper published by a social activism group in Richmond, Va., called the Defenders of Freedom, Justice and Equality. She discovered runaway ads and stories on revolts, all of which inspired her work. "This series is my way of honoring the lives and spirit of the fighters and unsung heroes," James said.
