"Pull"

2/2/2006 SAVANNAH, GA. — "Pull" is an invitation to interact with form, surface and space. The works in the exhibition have pull — a draw and attraction that entice viewers closer. The artists in the show use a vast array of materials to evade dimensional definition in a playful and sometimes coy manner. The exhibition focuses on formal qualities that cause viewers to reexamine their assumptions about space. Leslie Wayne, a New York-based painter, explores the sculptural possibilities of paint as if “a Hans Hoffman painted rectangle had a mind of its own and took off for a corner to curl up and take a nap, or rolled down and nearly fell off the bottom of the canvas” (Jeanette Fintz, “Don Porcaro and Leslie Wayne," The Artful Mind, September 2002). Wayne’s husband and collaborator, sculptor Don Porcaro, has created a body of work in "Pull" that playfully throws viewers off kilter by joining together incongruous materials such as stone, rubber, metal and plastic. He has seamlessly, elegantly and convincingly combined these materials in an intriguing manner that references tools, toys and artifacts. In addition, work by SCAD ceramics professor Yves Paquette, industrial design professor Tom Gattis, foundation studies professors Amy Norgaard and Kip Bradley, and 2005 painting alumnus Wyatt Graff is also featured in "Pull."
