011807 SCAD-Atlanta holds inaugural gallery hop

1/18/2007

The Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta is holding its first gallery hop Jan. 18, 6-8 p.m. Three exhibitions are featured on the event, and refreshments will be provided.

“This event serves as an excellent opportunity for the Atlanta community to observe the breadth of the college and the exceptional work of our distinguished faculty, alumni and visiting artists,” said Kenneth Knowles, manager of the Atlanta College of Art Gallery of SCAD.

The gallery hop marks the opening of “Baghdad and Beyond: Drawings by Steve Mumford,” on display through Feb. 28 at the Atlanta College of Art Gallery of SCAD, 1280 Peachtree St. N.E.

“We’re really excited about the exhibition,” said Knowles. “Steve Mumford will actually be at the reception.”

Mumford visited Iraq four times in 2003-04 and traveled with U.S. Army units to Baghdad, as well as seven other cities. He served as a combat illustrator and chronicled, in watercolor and sepia ink images, various experiences from the war. His illustrations include depictions of various facets of Iraq, from troops preparing to hunt a sniper who had killed one of their comrades, to soldiers using a mock driving range on the roof of one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

Mumford also visited the Brooke Army Medical Center in 2006, where he created portraits of disabled war veterans. These images also appear in the exhibition.

According to press materials for “Baghdad and Beyond,” Mumford “manages to create a camera-like objectivity, but uses his artistry to portray the humanity of both the Iraqi citizens and U.S. soldiers in the war.”

In addition to Mumford’s work, two exhibitions are featured at the college’s main building, 1600 Peachtree St.

Work by painting and foundation studies faculty members is on display in “protectingflatsurfacesfrom,” showing in Gallery 1600. “Snowbound,” exhibited in Trois Gallery, showcases winter landscapes photographed by Lisa Robison, SCAD’s 2006 Outstanding Alumna.

The gallery hop is free, and free parking is available at the college’s main building. Trans¬portation will be provided to and from the ACA Gallery of SCAD, which is located on the Woodruff Arts Center campus.
