"Take Flight"

1/11/2005 ATLANTA — Savannah Gallery, 3096 Roswell Road, presents "Take Flight," a mixed-media exhibition that explores the sensory experience and symbolism of soaring in the sky, Jan. 11–Feb. 5, 2005. Works integrate bird, airplane and tower imagery to examine the metaphorical concept of what it means to take flight and are the creations of students, alumni and faculty of the Savannah College of Art and Design. Rich Gere, SCAD painting professor and director of the college's printmaking program, will show several works in the exhibition, including sculpture, print, painting and works on paper. "Long Trip, Short Ride," a mixed media on panel, features two free-floating arms guiding model airplanes over a background of faint, amorphous, crane-like images. The piece plays with the notion of control that people think they have over their lives, yet subtly hints at the lack of control that lurks beneath the surface. According to Gere, his work centers on the big questions humans spend their lives trying to answer-what is the purpose of life, how are we interconnected and what is the extent of our knowledge, among others. "The prints and paintings are a step toward connecting the threads between temporal and ethereal worlds, "a look into ourselves while looking outward at the vast workings of time and space," said Gere. "My intent is to display an action but also to evoke a sense of stillness and contemplation. This recent work portrays an alignment of our trust in ourselves with the trust we have in the forces outside our control that govern our lives." Other exhibiting artists include Nathan Abels (M.F.A. student in painting), Joseph Gamble (M.F.A. student in photography), Matthew Hebermehl (B.F.A., painting, 2003), Shelli Lane (B.F.A. student in fibers), Michael Scoggins (M.F.A., painting, 2004) and James Walker (M.F.A., photography, 2004). The latest addition to the Savannah College of Art and Design galleries, Savannah gallery is a contemporary art gallery that showcases the work of students, alumni, faculty and distinguished artists. Regular hours are 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call 404.816.0247.
