1/5/2007 A traveling exhibition from Venice, Italy, is visiting the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Red Gallery, 201 E. Broughton St., Jan. 5-30. “A Fabulous Yellow” showcases children’s book illustrations from artists around the world. The exhibition features the top 30 entries from the 2006 Teatrio International Illustration Competition in Venice. For the annual competition, illustrators submit art without text for children’s books based on a theme. Mohamed Danawi, an illustration professor at SCAD, has served as a judge since 2004, along with other industry experts from around the world. More than 500 illustrations were submitted, and judges evaluated creative visual solutions and technical excellence, as well as appeal to children. According to publicity materials, the theme — yellow — challenged illustrators with “two nuances for [the] same color: yellow as a shrill color, a recall [of] sun, [of] gold, [of] light, but also as a flash, an enlightenment as quick as lightning on the darkness and on the mysteries to solve.” Three illustration alumnae from SCAD were selected among the top 30 artists and will have their work displayed at their alma mater: Carrie Christian (B.F.A., 1998), Angela Dominguez (B.F.A., 2004) and Elissa Hudson (M.F.A., 2006). The featured artists represent an international selection, hailing from Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Venezuela. Being selected as one of the top illustrators is a prestigious accolade, according to Danawi. “The quality of the work is amazing,” he said. “These are the best 30 children’s book illustrators in the world. It’s important for our students to see the different techniques and styles.” In addition to the United States and Italy, where it launched in July 2006, “A Fabulous Yellow” has been on display in France and Mexico. Additional exhibitions are scheduled for Helsinki, Finland; Lisbon, Portugal; and Tokyo, Japan. The theme for the 2007 Teatrio competition is “Beyond the Mirror.” For more information and a link to images by winners of the 2006 competition, visit www.teatrio.it/flash/attivita/¬concorsiuk.ASP.
