Learn about new and innovative assessment techniques, approaches and processes in a variety of outcome-based assessment areas, including general education, foundations and individual programs. Workshops use a combination of lecture, discussion and small group exercises and are conducted by SCAD staff assessment coordinators.

Basics of Assessment, Problems with Measuring Unique Studies Effectively, and Solutions
Attendees will leave with understanding of:
  • The purpose and need for assessment
  • Assessment definitions
  • Unique problems of assessment in art and design
  • Criterion-referenced assessment
Classroom-level vs. Program-level Assessment
Attendees will leave with the ability to:
  • Create assessment plans for each type of assessment
  • Create rubrics for each type for of assessment
  • Understand threats to validity and reliability for each type of assessment
  • Connect the two forms of assessment in meaningful ways

Creating Rubrics Using Faculty Expertise
Attendees will leave with the ability to:

  • Identify the four assessment purposes: competence, performance, transformation and innovation
  • Identify four kinds of rubrics and match rubrics to assessment purposes
  • Describe the general principles of developing innovation expertise
  • Interview faculty to discover their knowledge of how the principles apply to their disciplines
  • Turn interview responses into rubrics useful for assessing education in creative disciplines
