SCAD presents the most recent body of oil paintings by New York City-based artist Leslie Wayne. Wayne is known primarily as an abstract painter, and her latest series features a well-recognized tool from the painter’s studio — a paint rag. She slowly applies dense layers of paint, pushing and folding the material into undulating layers of color. This unique process, a break from traditional painting, allows her to use paint as a structural material and not solely as a surfacing element.
Approaching oil paint as sculpture, Wayne scrapes, folds and cuts, building up the surface to create exuberant works that ask you to explore and reimagine the established categories of painting and sculpture.
In a recent interview with art writer Stephanie Buhmann, Wayne said, "Color and form are one and the same in my paintings, which is what defines so much of their character."
This exhibition is organized by SCAD curator of exhibitions Alexandra Sachs.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
