Crites Hall, Mondanaro Theater

Savannah, GA

217 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Step back in time with the SCAD performance ensemble into a world of big dreams and even bigger hair in “Hairspray.”

Join 30 performers including American Idol semi-finalist Sandie Lee as “Motormouth Maybelle” as they dance to fight racism in 1960s Baltimore backed by a seven-piece band.

“Hairspray” debuted on Broadway in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards out of 13 nominations in 2003. Based on the 1998 film by John Waters, “Hairspray” has received national and international productions, and in 2007 was adapted into a film starring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken and Queen Latifah.

The show is presented as part of PE SCORES!, a reading series under the direction of SCAD music director Kevin Wallace. Each reading is produced using minimal costumes and set, with actors holding their scores and scripts, focusing on the words and music.

The event is free and open to the public.
