Dramatic writing is storytelling at its most elemental. Writers learn the crafts of playwriting and screenwriting and create scripts for live performance, film, television, animation and more. Before the rise of the first curtain, before the first fade-in, a dramatic writer develops the characters, actions and dialogue that make stories worth watching.
At SCAD, dramatic writing students are surrounded by actors, directors, designers, animators and other artists. Students write screenplays for short films, features and television, as well as one-act and full-length stage plays.

Through quarterly writing projects and collaborative work, dramatic writing students create a portfolio of work designed to help them gain entry to the world of professional writing. At events such as the Savannah Film Festival, writers network with filmmakers, studio and development executives, entertainment lawyers and agents, as well as casting directors and producers, gaining further understanding of the field.
