A sustainable futureDesign for sustainability infuses social and environmental science methodologies into design disciplines, seeking to educate and advocate the economic benefits of sustainable practices. The program embraces sustainability as an integrative framework by:
- Synthesizing the strengths of various design disciplines;
- Dealing with 2-D and 3-D design as well as system and service design, communication and education, business models and social innovation;
- Focusing on holistically addressing personal, local and global challenges to the human condition in the 21st century.
Design for sustainability is offered in Savannah.
Guided by that notion, SCAD's design for sustainability program is equipping future leaders in various fields with the knowledge and tools to design solutions integrating the "triple bottom line" of sustainability-environment, economy and socio-cultural issues-in the development process. Students examine the interconnectedness between business and environment and between human beings and nature, becoming experts in all aspects of sustainability.
The design for sustainability program introduces students to a wide range of real-world challenges and experiences through various collaborative projects, from designing a more inviting sustainable city transportation system to creating a process of salvaging materials for other uses from buildings set to be demolished.
Upon graduating, design for sustainability students have a competitive advantage, possessing the knowledge, skills and abilities to direct and integrate sustainable practices in multiple creative fields. SCAD alumni are empowered to become professional sustainability consultants as well as sustainability leaders in corporations and other organizations.
