Frequently asked questions

How do I know if online education is a good fit for me?

SCAD eLearning welcomes students from any of the SCAD locations and from around the world. Many online education students are working professionals, while others may be seeking to transition into art, design and related fields. Some students choose eLearning because they do not live or work near a college or university that offers SCAD's unique programs of study in art and design. See if an eLearning program may be right for you.

Are SCAD eLearning courses available only online?

All courses offered through eLearning are also offered in SCAD classrooms. SCAD eLearning students receive the same level of instruction and follow the same curriculum via online education they would if they took courses in a traditional classroom setting at the university.

SCAD eLearning provides many resources to help guide students toward success. Through the eLearning virtual campus, eLearning staff seek to ensure that distance-learning students are included and connected with their peers, faculty and the entire SCAD community.

What are the online courses like?

If you have ever used the Internet or attached a file to an e-mail, then most of the actual class environment will be familiar. New eLearning students are introduced to the online education environment during an online orientation course that offers information about university resources and opportunities, explains how to navigate the online courses and MySCAD, and provides how-to videos on ordering textbooks and performing other tasks.

What is blended-learning? What is limited-residency?

  • Blended-learning courses and programs combine on-campus classes with quality online education to support specific campus, constituent and programmatic needs.
  • Limited-residency programs require five-week residency sessions on a designated SCAD campus for one or two summer terms, depending on the degree program. Limited-residency students also take some of their coursework via eLearning.

Do online courses meet at specific times?

All courses are 10 weeks long and follow the university's academic calendar, but there are no specific meeting times for online courses. However, students are expected to complete coursework according to a schedule that stipulates due dates, and there are asynchronous online sessions for students and professors to meet, assess and critique work or expand on discussion board postings.

When do classes start?

SCAD eLearning students may begin their study any quarter during the academic year.  While course registrations adhere to the normal SCAD calendar of four 10-week quarters, online education classes are not held at set times. However, students are expected to complete coursework according to a schedule that stipulates due dates and asynchronous online sessions for students and professors to meet, assess and critique work or expand upon discussion board postings. Students in eLearning courses are expected to participate in all assignments, examinations and field trips or other special activities as directed by the professor. Attendance is determined by active login time and participation in required activities.

Is eLearning tuition the same as for the SCAD Savannah, Hong Kong and Atlanta locations?

eLearning tuition is the same as what it would cost for a student to take courses at other SCAD locations. SCAD's degrees are equivalent, regardless of where they are earned.

Can all eLearning programs be completed entirely online?

All SCAD eLearning programs can be completed entirely online with the exception of the limited residency graduate programs in painting. The M.A. and M.F.A. painting programs have a five-week summer residency requirement and students must begin during summer quarter. The M.A. in painting has two summer residencies and the M.F.A. has three summer residencies. Housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. These are cohort-based programs requiring a summer start.

Students enrolling in all other eLearning programs can be begin in fall, winter, spring and summer quarters.

Does SCAD offer scholarship opportunities to eLearning students?

Yes, SCAD eLearning applicants have the same scholarship opportunities as if you were applying to one of our other locations.

Through the admission department, SCAD administers a number of scholarships for entering students. Scholarship recipients are expected to be particularly strong and positive leaders at SCAD, excelling academically and representing SCAD well within the community. Scholarships are available to both United States citizens and non-U.S. citizens, and are awarded to entering students prior to first-quarter attendance.
