VTech, one of the world's leading consumer-focused technology companies and a worldwide leader in corded and cordless telephones and electronic learning products, gave SCAD students the assignment to design fresh and original concepts that will keep VTech at the forefront of the telecommunications industry. After seven weeks of intense preparation in the United States, 16 SCAD industrial design students traveled to VTech's global headquarters in Hong Kong to deliver their design concepts to the company's senior design team during spring quarter 2008.
In response to the quality of the student designs, VTech offered positions to three SCAD students, one as a full-time designer and two as design interns. In 2009, following the success of the initial program, 12 more students and two professors from SCAD's industrial design department traveled to Hong Kong to present new design concepts to VTech, centering around the idea of the "connected home." Those ideas will be evaluated and considered by the senior design team of the company for further product development.
