New elective course offered for fall
The media and performing arts department announces a new elective course for fall 2004: Interpersonal Communication (or How to Play Well With Others), MPRA 401L-01, course No. 16943. The class will be taught Mondays and Wednesdays 3-5:30 in Crites Hall and is available to both graduate and undergraduate students. For more information, e-mail professor Carolyn Babcock, Ph.D., at cbabcock@scad.edu.

Learn the basics of Blackboard
The AIM Center is offering a Blackboard Basics course open to all faculty. It is designed to introduce the fundamentals of how to create and develop a course in Blackboard. Participants in the class will learn how to access and navigate within all areas of BlackBoard, including the control panel and content areas, and will be able to customize the course look and feel, and upload content.

This course will be delivered online and can be completed at your own pace. The estimated time to complete the course is three hours. The course ends June 11 and will be open for enrollment until May 28. For more information, e-mail Chris Bass at cabass@scad.edu.

Sign up for summer vehicle storage
The transportation and parking services department has secured alternative storage for students who need assistance with vehicle storage during the summer break. Vehicle storage will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but a minimum participation of 150 cars is needed to secure the space.

If you would like to take advantage of summer vehicle storage, pick up a Vehicle Storage Form from transportation and parking services. Return the form to transportation and parking services before May 12.

The parking storage is $50 per month, and you need to pay in advance for the time your vehicle is to be stored.

The storage area is in Statesboro in a secured warehouse, and a SCAD shuttle bus is available for transportation from the warehouse May 21, 24, 28 and 31. The bus arrives at 2 p.m. and leaves the warehouse for Savannah at 4 p.m., with no exceptions.

To retrieve your vehicle at the end of summer break, you can take the bus leaving Savannah Sept. 3, 6, 10 and 13 from Weston House at 2 p.m. The bus only runs on these Fridays and Mondays. No exceptions will be made.

Please sign up immediately if you would like to take advantage of this service. For more information, call 525-RIDE.

Athletics department to offer camps
The athletics department is offering summer sports camps in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, softball, tennis, triathlon and volleyball. Children of SCAD employees receive a 10 percent discount. For more information and a downloadable registration form, visit www.scad.edu/athletics.

Faculty needed to teach summer workshops
From July 23 to Aug. 27, students from around the world will be attending the English as a second language department’s five-week Summer Intensive Program. This program is designed for students who are looking for an intensive immersion experience in English. Most are interested in attending Savannah College of Art and Design and a few have already been accepted, so this is an opportunity to acquaint them with the various classes offered and professors who teach them. Since it is often their first encounter with American culture, students also learn about American social and academic expectations. In addition to attending classes to help develop proficiency in basic language skills, students tour museums and galleries, plan and prepare a meal, work collaboratively on projects, view films, go to the breach, and attend workshops offered by faculty in the art and design departments. Such workshops give students an opportunity to explore various fields and familiarize themselves with the college and its resources.

Faculty from several departments contributed to the program’s success last summer by offering two or three-hour workshops, which gave the students a chance to try their hand at, for example, glass etching and self-portrait drawing. The program is looking for studio instructors with a few hours to spare and some good ideas to involve our students in a hands-on project. If you would like to help, e-mail Robyn Bantel at rbantel@scad.edu.
