Alumni chapters expand to the Midwest

By Linda Tierney

The weather station reporter said an unusual warm front had suddenly swept over the Chicago area but others knew differently. This sudden change in Chicago was really caused by the excitement and warmth of the Savannah College of Art and Design alumni getting together for their inaugural meeting Feb. 28. Laughter and hugs filled the room as alumni had the opportunity to see old friends and to learn more about what other alumni in the area were doing. "It's so wonderful to hear how proud our alumni are of their SCAD education and how supportive they are of the college and each other," said Nancy Tanneberg, alumni relations coordinator.

The alumni attending the meeting were Allison Sanchez (B.F.A. photography, 1994), president of the chapter; Kira (Mullaney) Kornecki (B.F.A. graphic design, 1998), vice president of the chapter; Doug Kornecki (B.F.A. graphic design 1998); Jim Haag (B.F.A. graphic design, 1999); Courtney Smith (B.F.A. graphic design, 2002); Jenny Bradley (B.F.A. graphic design, 2002); Kim Kinney (B.F.A. interior design, 1991); Susan Stuart (M.F.A. graphic design, 1999); Robert Biniewicz (B.F.A. computer art, 2003); Todd Urban (B.F.A. graphic design, 1996); Eunice Tsai (M.F.A. interior design, 1996); Maribeth Ratajczyk (B.F.A. video/film, 1993); Deanna Conway Pierce (B.F.A. graphic design, 1995); Laura Rodman (M.F.A. graphic design, 1999); Peggy Laurencell (B.F.A. graphic design and illustration, 1996); Jeannie Moses Strong (B.F.A. graphic design, 1996); Wei Cheng (B.F.A. graphic design candidate); Junko Funato (M.A. graphic design, 1997); Wempy Homeric (M.F.A. graphic design, 1998); Kerui Luo (M.A. graphic design, 1998); Shangyu Yin (M.F.A. computer art, 2002); Kevin Black (B.F.A. computer art, 1994); Jennifer Eng (B.F.A. interior design, 1995); Jason Kocher (B.Arch., 2000); and Mike Richards (B.Arch., 2001).

The alumni were very interested in what the other chapters were doing and how they might make their chapter successful. The key initiatives discussed were networking, career opportunities, welcoming new alumni, helping admission and student mentoring. The leadership team will be meeting over the next month to discuss and finalize the initiatives of the chapter and plan the first networking event.
