This hands-on workshop, designed for beginning painters and those who have never prepared their own canvases, outlines the correct use of necessary tools, various types and weights of canvas, priming methods, and stretcher and crossbar selection. All supplies are provided.
Reco Sturgis has worked as the manager of one of Atlanta's major art supply houses, where he oversaw an inventory of more than 500,000 art-related materials and supplies. His broad base of knowledge extends to virtually all artistic disciplines. Sturgis is also a certified custom framer.

This workshop provides novice users with a practical overview of the basics of this standard program for image enancement, manipulation, and digital workflow and file conversion. Photoshop tools, selections, channel masks, color control, true edge extractions, layers, type and vectors are covered in a condensed, but thorough, workshop format.
Elijah Hendon has worked in graphic design for more than 25 years. He has a multifaceted background in illustration and computer graphics, with clients including the Coca-Cola Co., the city of New York, McDonald's Corp., Ketchum Communications and the Mingo Group.
Glass Blowing (Register)Saturday and Sunday, 2-6 p.m. August 9-10

Instructor: Matt Janke
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn and practice the intricate art of glassblowing. Students learn the basic universal techniques, including gathering, marvering, bubble blowing and color application. The project-oriented structure of the workshop allows students to create tumblers, paperweights and blown fish. Students should dress for the season in this semi-enclosed studio space. Students are required to provide their own safety goggles or glasses. Studio costs and all other workshop materials and supplies are included in the registration fee.
This course is conducted off site at Janke Studios, located in the Studioplex Art Center. Detailed driving directions will be provided upon registration.
Matt Janke and his wife, Kim, are the owners and operators of Janke Studios in the Studioplex on Auburn Avenue. Janke also owns a studio in the Nunn Complex in Marietta. In addition to being a noted glassblower, he is an accomplished jewelrymaker.
Flash Web Site (Register)Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Instructor: Tony Ross
In a compressed format, students learn the basic rules of Web design and how to create a simple site in Flash. Concepts, techniques and data types covered include Flash interface, Button, MovieClip, graphic symbols, ActionScript, motion graphics in Flash, adding sound and uploading content to the Web. Each student creates and uploads a basic site.
Tony Ross has served as a professor of electronic arts at ACA, in addition to teaching teen and adult courses in computer animation and Web design through the ACA Community Education Program. Ross's roster of freelance clients for multimedia and Web design includes the Woodruff Arts Center and Focusmovement.com. He also has created animation for The Freedom Toast and Dabel Brothers. His first book, "The Little Book of Flash Animation: Tutorials and Practices," will be published this summer.
Mock-Quilting Collage (Register)Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Instructor: Kimberly Landers
This workshop uses both traditional and contemporary quilting designs as the basis for fabric collage. Participants cut and tear fabric pieces to use in the creation of a collage, for which they glue down the fabric (apologies to more traditional quilters). Repetition, color, composition and nonrepresentational design are the focus of this project. Students should bring all the fabric they can, in a variety of colors and textures. Glue and collage surfaces are provided.

Kimberly Landers recently began to pursue her artistic career. She has exhibited extensively throughout Atlanta and has been included in more than 20 regional shows in the last few years. Landers' primary medium is paint, and she uses bold colors with an idealized drawing style. Extensive travel, both personal and as a teaching guide, has influenced her artistically.
Photocopy Transfer (Register)Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Students incorporate the process of transferring photocopied images to create several pieces of mixed-media art. Ink is transferred via gel medium to a heavyweight watercolor paper. After the transfer is complete, details are added using other media. Students should bring many photocopied images in a variety of sizes to the workshop. High-contrast images work well. Additionally, students need three large sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper. All other materials are provided.
