Proficiency is required in reading and translation of French, Italian, Spanish or German. Students can meet this requirement by passing the language exam administered by the department. Students also must pass a comprehensive architectural history exam as part of the degree requirement.

Students are required to take courses from at least three of the four major periods of architectural history: ancient, medieval, Renaissance through rococo, and modern. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to take non-Western courses.
