SCAD Challenge
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Offering high school and secondary school students an international stage to exhibit their work, the SCAD Challenge seeks the next generation of talented artists and designers. High school seniors and juniors and students completing their last two years of secondary school compete for scholarships to attend SCAD, the university for creative careers. SCAD is proud to serve as the Georgia affiliate and program administrator for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

For the past 90 years, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have recognized the exceptional vision of our nation's youth, providing a singular opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Since being founded in 1923, the awards have identified the early promise of some of our nation's most exceptional visionaries. Notable award recipients include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein and Cy Twombly; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin and John Lithgow; filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns and Ned Vizzini; and many more.

The awards are structured so that student work is judged first at the regional level and then at the national level. All submitted works are reviewed by local professionals working in the visual and literary arts and receive Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention Awards. Select award-winning works are also included in a regional exhibition.

Works that receive Gold Key recognition at the regional level are automatically included in the pool of nationally judged Gold Key work from across the country.

Only for Portfolios that have been awarded Gold or Silver, please select 2 pieces to submit to the exhibition in Atlanta rather than sending the entire portfolio. If the pieces in the portfolio were also awarded in an individual category, please select 2 other pieces from the portfolio to submit.

Recognition

Naughty Dog recognizes Liu and Lenz
Philip Liu, M.F.A. visual effects student and SCAD alumnus (B.A., digital media, 2011) and Joseph Lenz, M.A. visual effects student and SCAD alumnus (B.F.A., visual effects, 2011) were recognized by the game company Naughty Dog for game art created submitted to a Fan Art Competition based on their upcoming game "The Last of Us." This project was created in an independent study with Luis Cataldi, chair of the SCAD interactive design and game development. See full game art.
Craig Stevens receives educator prize
SCAD professor Craig Stevens, a photographer, printmaker and educator, has received the inaugural $5,000 Susan Carr Educator Prize from the American Society of Media Photographers. Stevens has taught photography at SCAD for 25 years.
C&R Press publishes Chris Bundy book
"Baby You're a Rich Man," a book by writing professor Chris Bundy, has been published by C&R Press. The book, illustrated by SCAD alumnus Max Currie (B.F.A., sequential art, 2012), follows the story of Ken Richman, a down-on-his-luck, B-level variety star on Japanese television who is forced to go into hiding when he becomes the target of an escaped prisoner. "Baby You're a Rich Man" will be released in May.
Absher was named Liz Claiborne Design Scholar
B.F.A. fashion student Katherine Absher was named the 2013 Liz Claiborne Design Scholar by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The prestigious $25,000 award is presented each year to the student who best addresses through fashion the lifestyle and needs of women, as judged by a panel of fashion industry experts.
