Who should take this exam?
All new students must demonstrate math competency either by successfully completing a math course or by passing the math competency exam. Students who are confident in their math ability may elect to take the math competency exam during their first term of enrollment. The exam is comprised of 50 questions and covers algebra, geometry, numerical operations, probability and statistics. The test should take approximately 90 minutes to complete.
Students who elect to take the math competency exam must earn a minimum score of 70 percent to substitute an approved math or science course for their major's math/science requirement*. Requirements vary by program, so students should consult their student success advisers for more information on the math requirements for a specific major and catalog year.
Students do not receive course credit for passing the math competency exam.
The math competency exam may be taken either at summer swarm or during students' first term of enrollment. Students may not take the exam more than once or after their first term of enrollment.
