Advertising Design

FeiFei Sun (B.F.A., advertising design, 2008) has accepted a position as editorial assistant at Vanity Fair magazine in New York. Read her first Web story.


Cecilia Benitez (M.A., advertising design, 2007) was hired at Ambit Advertising and Public Relations, a full-service agency based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as a graphic designer. She will design advertising collateral, direct mail campaigns and client Web sites.


Jason Hulbert (B.F.A., advertising design, 2008) was awarded an internship at Brown Dog Creative, a Web design boutique in Jacksonville, Fla.


Animation

“An Essential Introduction to Maya Character Rigging” by animation professor Cheryl Cabrera (M.F.A., computer art, 2001) was published in January. 3D World Magazine called the book “a recommended resource for newcomers to character and rigging workflow.” Visit the book Web site.

Crackle.com declared Zach Parrish’s (B.F.A., animation, 2007) film “Carried Away” the winner of its Wet Paint contest. Parrish created the film while he was a student at SCAD. As winner, Parrish receives $15,000 cash, technical training and an executive meeting at Sony Pictures Imageworks, and a free trip to the 2008 Siggraph Conference in Los Angeles. Read the article. Architecture

Michael Ayres (M.Arch, 2002) is co-owner of a new store in Savannah called Structured Green, located at 620 E. 35th St. Structured Green is a store that carries only eco-friendly, modern furniture that is designed with respect to the environment and recycled at the end of its useful life. Ibtisam Wilson, who is in charge of the store’s Web site as well as marketing for the store, will begin pursuing a B.F.A. in visual effects at SCAD this fall. 

Lynn Reuter and Jon Leonard (M.Arch 1997) have created Total Design Concepts, a new company involved in the designing and building of new homes, the renovation of existing homes, commercial building, and architectural, interior and landscape design. Art History

The Naples Art Association at The von Liebig Art Center hired Abigail Miles (M.A., art history, 2005) to be manager of education. She will oversee the adult and youth studio art classes, children’s summer education program, workshops, annual exhibition of work by high school students, youth scholarship program as well as other events and education activities.


Arts Administration

Bridget Tunstall (M.F.A., performing arts, 2006) directed a Feb. 19 performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” at the Savannah Actors Theatre. The play’s cast included undergraduate performing arts students Jessica Giannone and Vanessa Ortiz, graduate performing arts student Ellie Pyle, arts administration graduate student Suzanne Samons (B.F.A., performing arts, 2006) and Hannah Gold (B.F.A., performing arts, 2007). All ticket sales went to the Rape Crisis Center in Savannah, Ga.

Computer Art

Planet Propaganda promoted Nate Theis (B.F.A., computer art and film/video, 2001) to associate creative director and director of the firm’s motion design group. Theis’ student film “Bob the Slob” screened at the 2002 Cannes International Film Festival. Professionally, Theis' films have screened at festivals around the world including two that tied for Best Narrative or Animated Short at the Wisconsin Film Festival.


Digital Photography

“Oatland Island: Photographs and History,” a book by Tara Parekh (M.A., digital photography, 2007), was presented at the 2008 On Demand Expo sponsored by Canon Inc. Fibers

Karla Cranfield (B.F.A., fibers, 2007) is a designer at Mohawk Industries in Calhoun, Ga., and reviewed student portfolios at the SCAD Career Fair April 4.


Dani Niedzielski (B.F.A., fibers, 2007) works for Marc Jacobs and is stationed in London to help scout a new location for a Marc by Marc Jacobs store and will assist with its opening. She also coordinates and organizes the existing stores.


Kanako Muraguchi (fibers M.F.A. candidate), Andrea Gray (fibers M.F.A. candidate), Allison Ancel (fibers senior), and Suzanne Owen (B.F.A., fibers, 2007) were selected to participate in the DIRECTION international textile design show’s Forward Leap Network in New York April 15-16. Forward Leap is a professional opportunity within the trade show that showcases student work to prospective employers.


Paintings by Wendy White (B.F.A., fibers, 1994) appeared in two group exhibitions: “INSIDEOUT” at Galeria Moriarty, Madrid, Spain, March 13 – April 26; and “Accident Blackspot” at Markus Winter Gallery in Berlin, Germany, through March 15, which will then travel to ATM Gallery in New York, May 15 – June 21.


America Jones-Gallaspy (B.F.A., fibers, 1997) is one of three finalists for the Fairhope, Ala., Committee on Public Art’s competition to design and create a fountain for the Fairhope Museum of History Plaza. Her entry, “Mullet Run,” consists of five water surges with multiple bronze mullets on rods that give the illusion of mullet swimming.


Abigail Siegel (B.F.A., fibers, 2008) is an assistant textile designer for Gilly Hicks, a new Abercrombie & Fitch brand of lingerie shops.

The Jackson Press ran an article about Barefoot Workshops and its founder Chandler Griffin (B.F.A., video/film, 1998). The list of scheduled speakers on the National Association of Broadcasters conference schedule in Las Vegas included Andy Beach (B.F.A., video/film). He delivered two lectures: “Encoding Video and Audio for Maximum Impact” and “Television Networks and New Media” April 14-15. Peachpitt Press published Beach’s book, “Real World Video Compression,” which is available at bookstores nationwide.


The American Film Institute Conservatory accepted graduate film and television student Yousef Linjawi (B.F.A., film and television, 2007) into Master of Fine Arts program in cinematography beginning Fall 2008. Linjawi, who will be mentored by professional cinematographers, received news of his acceptance from cinematographer and AFI senior filmmaker-in-residence Stephen Lighthill (“Sons and Daughters,” “60 Minutes”). “The AFI was founded in 1967 as a national arts organization to train filmmakers and preserve America's vanishing film heritage” (from afi.com).


Augusta-based filmmaker and television producer Rob Forbes (B.F.A., film and television, 1987) announced that his independent film, “A Rose for the Little Lady,” won an Honorable Mention Award and acceptance into the 13th Annual Twin Rivers Multimedia Film Festival. The screening took place Feb. 15 at Courtyard Gallery and Agency in Ashville, N.C., and was followed by a question-and-answer session with Forbes.


“Sunlight and Babies,” the senior thesis film by Kim Craig (B.F.A., film and television, 2007), earned a Director's Choice Award at the 2008 Black Maria Film Festival Feb. 16. The short film offers an intimate portrait of the lives of truck drivers, one of America’s most overlooked sub-cultures.


Sony World Photography Awards nominated Nathan “Bob” Jones (B.F.A., film and television, 2007) in the professional entries advertising category. Winners will be announced April 24 during a finalist’s exhibition at Palais des festivals in Cannes April 21–25.


The Charleston County Library hosted a screening of Hunter Wentworth’s (B.F.A., film and television, 2007) “The Written Path” Feb. 21. Wentworth’s short documentary follows the South Carolina town’s creative community and features interviews with some well-known names in the literary world.


The SCADemy Award-nominated documentary “Binding Faith” by Dondra Vaughn Maynor (B.F.A., film and television, 2007) was released on DVD and is available for sale. During Fall 2007, Maynor’s documentary premiered before a packed house at the Savannah Theatre; in the audience where the subjects of her documentary, Christian missionaries Drs. Ajai and Indu Lall from India.


Daniel Vang (B.F.A., film and television, 2007) accepted an assistant position at William Morris Agency, Beverly Hills, Calif. Vang won the Silver Screen Foundation grant at the 2006 Savannah Film Festival.


Furniture Design

Undergraduate furniture design student Aaron Asedo and graduate painting student Mitchell Coffman displayed work by several students at the Philadelphia Buyers Market Feb. 16–18. The display included accessory design work by undergraduate furniture design students Sean Hackett, Jason Thackery and Colin Kelly; graduate furniture design students Chuck Heydinger and Joel Smith; and alumnus Wyatt Graff (B.F.A., illustration, 2001).


Travis King (B.F.A., furniture design, 1997) owns and operates Travis King Studio LLC, in East Hampton, N.Y., where he creates custom woodwork, interior design and home renovations for private estate owners and commercial firms. His first solo exhibition, “Art Attack,” was shown at the Travis King Studio in April, and featured his varied sculptures and paintings.


Ezra Taxel (M.F.A., furniture design, 2006) is the owner of Form2Design, a custom furniture company, in Cleveland. He recently entered into a partnership, APOC, with several other furniture designers in the area to create custom furniture pieces using reclaimed wood and other salvaged housing materials from razed buildings. The products are sold through the Planet Green retail store in Rocky River, Ohio.


General

Newman created the logo for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Ball as an Atlanta community outreach project. Carter's latest release, “The Big Book of Logos 5.” The book features “thousands of the best logos and trademarks in use in the world today,” according to publisher HarperCollins. Singleton's logo was selected in the international Logo 07 competition to earn a place in the book.


John Douglas Donehue (B.F.A., graphic design, 2003) gave a demonstration and lecture, titled “My Ideas in Metal,” March 29 at the Ellis-Nicholson Gallery in Charleston, S.C. The metal sculpture demonstration is part of the gallery’s “The Artist Speaks” series.


Benjamin Weiner (B.F.A., graphic design, 1998) recently launched his own clothing line, Benny Gold, which is sold in 25 stores across the country and in Japan and the Netherlands. The San Francisco-based designer’s clients have included Nike, Adidas, Stussy, Levi’s, Huf and The Hundreds. He was featured in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle April 13.


Kris Tsao (M.A., graphic design, 2007) is a designer at KCSA Strategic Communications in New York.


Ping Chen (M.A., graphic design, 2007) completed an internship that transformed into a full-time job with Titan Advertising Inc. in Savannah.


Leena Kent (B.F.A., graphic design, 2005) accepted a position as art manager at LoyaltyExpress in Woburn, Mass. LoyaltyExpress creates personalized communications and gifts that help professionals enrich customer relationships.


Ellen Lane (B.F.A., graphic design, 2007) is an in-house designer for SmartPak in Plymouth, Mass., a marketer of leading name brand, custom-packed supplements, food and toys for equines, felines and canines.

Illustration

Peter Hoffman (M.A., illustration, 2000) was mentioned in a blog by Larissa Meek as one of “20 Artists Who are Making Waves.”


The Foley Gallery in Chelsea, N.Y., will exhibit the first solo show of Chris Scarborough (B.F.A., illustration, 2000) April 17-May 31. His exhibition, “Warbabies,” features his graphite drawings that depict a theme of cartoon violence through the use of anthropomorphization. The Nashville resident is also the recipient of the 2008 Tennessee Artist Fellowship.


Mimia Johnson (B.F.A., illustration, 2008) accepted a position as associate art director with RTC, a “relationship marketing” agency of Young and Rubicam, where she will work on the Time-Warner account in Washington, D.C.



Edgar Sanchez Cumbas (B.F.A., illustration, 1994) was invited to work with a Tampa production company, Tampa Digital Studios, on a collaborative project for a short HD piece. Cumbas was locked in an old martial arts warehouse for several days and was documented making a mixed media piece. The video can be viewed on YouTube.

Laura Rogers (B.F.A., interior design, 2005) was selected by Boutique Design magazine, a publication for design in the hospitality industry, as one of its “Boutique 18,” an annual feature/award for young, up-and-coming designers in the hospitality area. Metals and Jewelry

Jessica Yeager’s (B.F.A., metals and jewelry, 2008) work was accepted to the Ethical Metalsmiths exhibition “Composting Good and Evil: Redesign for Sanctimonious Sinners.”


Maria Sotelo (M.A., metals and jewelry, 2007) is a teacher at Christel House International in Venezuela, where she teaches bijouterie, or jewelry without soldering.


Painting

“The Orange Step,” a solo traveling exhibition by native Bulgarian graduate painting student Kiril Jeliazkov (B.F.A., painting and computer art, 2003) made its second stop at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Feb. 25–March 2. The exhibition, a collection of German vinyl canvases painted with Bulgarian-made weatherproof paint, was first on display in Savannah’s Forsyth Park. Lisa Johnston, Maggie Evans, Patrick Muniz McGrath, Monica Cook, Susan Murrell, Alex Gingrow, Michael Scoggins and Julio Garcia are all featured in the exhibition “Gen X:  Post Boomers and the New South,” at the Mobile (Ala.) Museum of Art April 11 - June 29. Visit the museum Web site.

Four images by alumna Jennifer Kassing-Bradley (B.F.A., 2001; M.F.A., 2004) recently were licensed by art-licensing company Transformational Threads.  The work includes one oil painting and three watercolors.

Jamee Linton (B.F.A., illustration, 1999: M.F.A., painting, 2003) showed a variety of landscapes and urbanscapes at the annual Buckman Art Show and Sale in Portland, Ore., April 11-12.  Her paintings will be featured in a home designed by Vern Yip in a May 17 episode of the HGTV show “Deserving Design.” She also will be featured in the May/June issue of Oregon Home Magazine.

“To the Sea,” a solo exhibition by Michael Rich, is on display at the Newport Art Museum in Newport, R.I., April 11 – June 1.

Scott Griffin’s exhibition “Bounty” was on display at the Globe on East 73rd Street in Savannah May 3.

Painting faculty alumnus Michael Rich has an exhibition, “Michael Rich,” at the George Billis Gallery in New York March 25 - April 26.

Undergraduate printmaking students Sarabeth Noggle and Steven Peterman traveled to San Francisco Feb. 15 to install the exhibition “A Million Little Pictures” at the 111 Minna Gallery. Peterman’s gallery, Art House, had sent disposable cameras to artists throughout the United States and hosted a show of the photographs in the city that had the most contributors. Another Art House exhibition, “Ordinary Things,” featured work by SCAD-Atlanta printmaking student Andrew Brodhead and alumnus Patrick Coll (B.F.A., painting, 2007).

Performing Arts

Bridget Tunstall (M.F.A., performing arts, 2006) directed a Feb. 19 performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” at the Savannah Actors Theatre. The play’s cast included undergraduate performing arts students Jessica Giannone and Vanessa Ortiz, graduate performing arts student Ellie Pyle, arts administration graduate student Suzanne Samons (B.F.A., performing arts, 2006) and Hannah Gold (B.F.A., performing arts, 2007). All ticket sales went to the Rape Crisis Center in Savannah, Ga.


A production of “The House of Yes,” directed by Charlotte Brecht Munn (B.F.A., performing arts, 2006) and featuring a performance by Emily K. Harrison (M.F.A., performing arts, 2004), will run at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Black Box Theatre May 15-24. For more information, visit the Web site.

Kofke, Noellert and Rodriguez received gift certificates to the SCAD-Atlanta bookstore in recognition of their exemplary work.

Chief academic officer Tom Fischer has released the first edition of his book "Paradise/Paradox," a collection of photographs including images of places revered for their perfection of form, historic cultural landscapes and views of paradise lost. In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, the Natchez Trace Parkway in Tupelo, Miss., displayed photographs by Kate Cleghorn (M.F.A., photography, 1998) in an exhibition titled “Women’s Arts: Women’s Vision.” The exhibition was also displayed at the Vermont Center for Photography in Brattleboro, Vt., and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Montgomery, Ala.


The “Women in Photography” exhibition on display through Feb. 26 at Marian Graves Mugar Art Gallery in Concord, N.H., included images by Linda Ost (M.F.A., photography, 2001). The Concord Monitor published a feature about Ost, currently a visiting professor at Colby-Sawyer College, and the other exhibition artists Feb. 7.


Canon purchased the rights to print “Oatland Island: Photographs and History” by Tara Parekh (M.F.A., photography, 2007) at trade shows worldwide. Canon printed 500 copies of the book at the On Demand Expo 2008 in Boston, Mass.


SCAD-Atlanta M.F.A. photography candidate Lee Jones organized a juried exhibition, “KA-CHUNK,” May 3-17 at The Opal Gallery in Atlanta featuring work by Atlanta artists who embrace medium-format photography. Artists exhibited include: undergraduate SCAD-Atlanta photography student Allyson Ross (B.F.A., metals and jewelry, 2004), Darin Melton, Julie Sims, Travis Dodd, Jones, Meegan McNeer, Stevie Brown, Chris Carder, Michael David Murphy and Nicole Akstein.



Brandon Schaffner (B.F.A., photography, 2004) released his first book of photographs, “The DFL Project,” April 26 during a release party at The Jinx in Savannah. Eli Schmidt (B.F.A., photography, 2002) is featured in the April issue of PDN magazine, in an article titled “Eli Schmidt Lights with Attitude,” a technical article based on his experiences in the studio.


Jeremias Paul (B.F.A., photography, 2003; M.F.A., photography, 2006) is an assistant professor of photography and undergraduate research liaison at Southern Utah University. He teaches a Contemporary Landscape class.


Adam Kuehl (B.F.A., photography, 2005) was accepted to the prestigious Review Santa Fe June 5-7, a two-day conference for photographers who have created a significant project or series and are seeking wider recognition.


Dan Saelinger (M.F.A., photography, 2004) was recently named a contributing photographer for both Popular Mechanics and Field & Stream magazines in New York.


Craig Reynolds (B.F.A., photography, 2007) does printing and retouching at Griffin Editions in New York.


Photographs by Malia Moss (B.F.A., photography, 2008) from her “Multiplicity” series were selected for the PDN Photo Annual 2008.


Students Silas Breaux, Jenna DiGiore, Jay Fox and Sarabeth Noggle and professor Robert Brown are involved in a pen pal project with Artists for Charity, a nonprofit organization in Ethiopia operated by alumna Abezash Tamerat (B.F.A., photography, 2005). The SCAD students are using drawings made by HIV-positive orphans to create editions of prints, which will be shipped back to Ethiopia and sold to raise funds for the organization. The pen pal project has been supported with donations from the SCAD printmaking department and Utrecht Art Supplies. For more information, visit the Web site.

Sculpture

Dean Roman (M.F.A., 1990) presented two workshops for SCAD at Instructional Technology Council e-Learning 2008 Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, Fla., Feb. 16. Titles were “Get a Second Life” and “Creating Community In Second Life.” Roman is creative director of BLUKID Design  and often consults on technology and education.

Sequential Art

Michelle Fabie (B.F.A., sequential art, 2000) was an animator on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” feature film, released in April.


Sarah Zaidan (B.F.A., sequential art, 2003) was a top 10 finalist in the Momiji Doll Design Competition sponsored by Don’t Panic. Her work will be part of an exhibition at the Leonard Street Gallery in London. View her entry online.


Marty LeGrow (B.F.A., sequential art, 2003) celebrated the dual release of her latest two projects published by TokyoPop, “Bizenghast Volume Four” and a coloring book featuring large reproductions of selected pages from her “Bizenghast” series.


Robert Atkins (M.F.A., sequential art, 2004) is drawing an online comic for the NBC series “Heroes.”


Rebekah Isaacs (B.F.A., sequential art, 2005) has taken over penciling for Mark Powers’ sci-fi comic “Drafted” for Devil’s Due Publishing. Isaacs’ work will be seen in the seventh volume, for sale May 14, and she previously worked on the “Twilight Zone” comics and “Hack/Slash.” Said Powers: “Rebekah’s strengths in portraying interpersonal moments and creating characters that truly act will allow us to dramatically depict the enormous personal and emotional costs being demanded of our cast as the scope of story expands.”

Ross Campbell (M.F.A., sequential art, 2002) donated more than 100 graphic novels and books for the sequential art department library.


Robert Atkins (B.F.A., sequential art, 2004) is penciling a fill-in issue of “Legion of Superheroes” for DC Comics and a 16-page “Iron Man” story for Marvel Comics.


“Tales of Traloden: The Beginning” is the new graphic novel written by Chad Corie and illustrated by Lee Oaks (B.F.A., sequential art, 2000). Oaks’ first comic gig was creating the title character for the “Thunder Monkey” series, a hybrid of Curious George and Superman. Read the Feb. 25 feature from The Coloradoan.


Tokyopop published the second volume in the “RE:play” manga series written and illustrated by Christy Lijewski (B.F.A., sequential art, 2003).


Mia Paluzzi (B.F.A., sequential art, 2006; sequential art M.F.A. candidate) and undergraduate sequential art student Kelly McDonald have teamed up on a new Keenspot.com feature comic titled “Strange Someone,” a spin-off series of McDonald's firmly-established feature “Sorcery 101.” Keenspot.com is the most frequented Web comic portal that provides opportunities for creators to generate revenue via banner ads.


Anis Mojgani (B.F.A., sequential art, 1999) performed his slam poetry in Spokane, Wash., April 23. He has appeared on HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam” and won the National Individual Poetry Slam in 2005 and 2006, and the 2007 World Cup Poetry Slam and Individual World Poetry Slam.


Johnny Timmons (B.F.A., sequential art, 2007) recently completed his first project for Marvel Comics. He penciled and inked a Wolverine story written by Dave Lapham, “Wolverine: The Amazing Immortal Man and Other Bloody Tales #1,” in stores May 14.


Urban Design

Lynn Reuter and Jon Leonard (M.Arch 1997) have created Total Design Concepts, a new company involved in the designing and building of new homes, the renovation of existing homes, commercial building, and architectural, interior and landscape design.
