"Central and parallel to my philosophy of teaching has been an analysis of my own experiences with learning. Not unlike most youngsters, I knew at an early age that I had learned more from 'Ms. Jones' than I had from 'Ms. Smith' - I just did not know why. As I grew older and began to focus on becoming a teacher, I recognized that the quality and quantity of my learning, along with the motivation I had developed to further pursue knowledge, was a direct result of how I was taught. The process was clear. I learned best from teachers who were enthusiastic about their subject material, who had a seemingly endless repository of knowledge and who relished in sharing and imparting that knowledge. I also learned best from those who gave me more than half a chance to succeed and provided encouragement every step of the way. I learned best when teachers expressed a belief in my abilities and set standards for me to strive for. I learned best when my teachers believed that significant learning is not possible unless the learner's feelings and intellect are both involved, and I learned best from those teachers who were, themselves, examples of excellence."
