Urban Design Overview

SCAD, Savannah, Jennifer Cohee, urban design Charleston, 2007The college offers an M.U.D. degree at SCAD-Savannah through the School of Building Arts.

Urban design professionals are involved with the design and planning of urban and suburban environments and the regulation or management of the development of extensive urban environments.

The activities of urban design and development are diverse in both type and scale. Endeavors may be pursued on a neighborhood scale, on a more comprehensive design for a city or town, or on a regional scale ranging from new town planning and suburban development to the rapid expansion of global cities.

M.U.D. classes place emphasis on the relationship between the design of varied public urban areas and private development.

The setting in Savannah, Georgia, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study intervention in urban historic districts, rehabilitation of downtown areas, improvement of decaying neighborhoods, transformation of abandoned sites, and the creation of new communities.
