SCAD, Savannah, Professor Thomas Gratis, industrial design, industrial design students collaborate

The college offers B.F.A., M.A. and M.F.A. degrees in industrial design at SCAD-Savannah through the School of Design. Industrial designers determine the form and function of products we use every day — designing them to suit user needs while also considering the demands and limitations of production. The industrial designer is in the business of creating new products, services or ideas that enable people to lead better lives, stimulate commerce and contribute to the wellbeing of the community and environment.

Industrial design courses parallel professional practice involving actual clients on projects including automobiles, boats, kayaks, hang gliders, motorcycles, snowboards and scooters. Industry partners including Coca-Cola, Hobie Cat, Eastman Chemical, Little Tikes, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation and Rubbermaid, among others, have sponsored multimedia industrial design projects.

Industrial design students work with wood, metals, plastics and composite materials to visualize and realize their design solutions. They also have access to a three-axis computer numeric controlled vertical milling machine and a large envelope five-axis CNC router.

The college’s Gulfstream Center for Furniture and Industrial Design is a 43,000-square-foot facility with state-of-the art studios, labs and workshops, high-end computer lab workstations and the latest industry software, including Autodesk Studio, Rhino 3-D, SolidWorks and Maya. Students may use 3-D printers to print polycarbonate or ABS 3-D models of their computer-generated designs.

SCAD Industrial Design Program Ranked Among Top 10 in the East
SCAD’s industrial design graduate and undergraduate programs were ranked third and fourth in the nation, respectively, by DesignIntelligence's 2008 edition of "America's Best Architecture and Design Schools." Both programs were ranked No. 1 in the South and among the top 10 in the East. The undergraduate program was also ranked No. 2 in the Midwest.
