Savannah College of Art and Design students who require tutoring may seek assistance through the learning assistance department. Services include academic counseling about topics such as study skills, time and stress management, college policies and learning styles. Free, ongoing, walk-in tutoring is offered in courses most often requested by students. Other specific tutoring is available by request.
Individual tutors are selected to assist students with courses and software not offered by the Learning Assistance Center.
Tutors are selected based on faculty recommendation, academic achievement and ability to communicate with fellow students. A schedule of academic tutoring sessions is available after the first week of each quarter.

Tutoring Policies
A student requesting tutoring may receive three hours of tutoring per class per week. Additional tutoring hours are granted on a case-by-case basis if extended time is needed to accomplish a particular project and at the discretion of the learning assistance coordinator. The tutor must contact the learning assistance coordinator to discuss a request for extended tutoring hours.
When the learning assistance coordinator has made an exception and granted a student extended tutoring hours, tutoring hours may not exceed three-hour blocks of time.
If a student requesting tutoring arrives at the tutoring session unprepared or has not completed the work the tutor assigned between sessions, the tutor ends the session.
If a student requesting tutoring misses two consecutive appointments, he or she is required to fill out a new request for tutoring application (PDF -- 167K). A tutor waits no longer than 20 minutes for the student to arrive. After that time, the student is considered a no-show for the appointment. Students who have requested tutoring assistance and are unable to attend the set tutoring appointment must call the tutor 24 hours in advance to cancel the appointment.
Tutors and the students requesting tutoring assistance are responsible for setting up their own appointments.
Students need to treat the tutor with common courtesy.
- Phone calls to set up tutoring appointments should be made during the day and early evening hours.
- Tutoring appointments should be set for mutually agreed-upon times.
- Students requesting tutoring assistance must observe the 24-hour cancellation policy.
- If a student encounters any difficulties with reaching the assigned tutor or setting an appointment for a mutually agreed-upon time, he or she should call the learning assistance coordinator at 912.525.8776.

Who is a Tutor?
Tutors are students who have specific knowledge or skills to share with other students. The requirements for becoming a tutor include the initial application process, positive referrals from professors, a 3.0 GPA or higher and enrollment in at least three classes. After tutors have been accepted and trained, they regularly meet or communicate with individuals or small groups to clarify problems and improve skills for a particular class. The tutor and student may review class material, discuss the text, predict test questions, formulate ideas for a paper or explore new software.
