Consider all bomb threats real

Threats of this nature should never be ignored. In the event of a bomb threat, the student, faculty member or staff member who receives or learns of the threat should do the following:

Telephoned threats
  • Remain calm and write down as much information about the call as possible, noting time of call, length of call, any distinguishing characteristics of the caller's voice, such as, angry or excited (to include male/female, accent, age, etc.), listen for background noises. Use theĀ  Bomb Threat Information Sheet.
  • Note the phone number on the caller ID.
  • If possible have another person call 911 while the person issuing the bomb threat is on the phone. Call 911 immediately after the caller hangs-up and then notify SCAD security.
  • Do not put the caller on hold and do not transfer the call.
  • Questions to ask the caller:
  1. When is the bomb going to explode?
  2. Where is the bomb located?
  3. What type of bomb is it?
  4. What does it look like?
  5. Why was the bomb placed?
  • Do not evacuate the building until ordered by Police/Fire or SCAD Security. (see Caller Information Sheet.)
  • Do not attempt to locate or examine the bomb.

Written threats
If a written threat of a possible bomb or other danger is received, call 911 or SCAD security immediately. Once the message is determined to be a threat, every effort must be made to protect the evidence. Avoid all handling at this point.
If a suspicious package is discovered, the individual making the discovery should immediately move away from the package and call SCAD Security or 911 and provide as much information as possible. Also:
  • Move people away from the package.
  • Do not move or open the package.
  • Do not attempt to investigate.
  • Do not cover, insulate or place the package in a cabinet or drawer.
  • Characteristics of a Suspicious Package:
  1. Excessive postage and weight
  2. Common words misspelled
  3. Bulky or rigid envelope
  4. Foreign mail or unexpected special delivery
  5. Poorly written or typed address and no return address
  6. Markings like "Personal" or "Confidential"
  7. Excessive packaging tape or string
  8. Stains or discoloration
  9. Visual distractions and protruding wires/tinfoil
