Harpel play finalist in national competition
M.F.A. dramatic writing student
Nate Harpel was selected as one of four finalists to compete in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival National Competition in Washington, D.C. He has been invited to participate in the KCACTF's residency program, which will culminate with a performance of his 10-minute play, "Like Pigeons," in April 2013 at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. Students receive awards at theater festival
Six SCAD students received awards at the 2013 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, Region IV competition in Albany, Georgia.
- M.F.A. performing arts student Alex Kanter took home the Best Director of the New Play Program award.
- B.F.A. performing arts student Anne-Marie Trabolsi won the Best Classical Actress award. She and M.F.A. performing arts student Cody Murphy were finalists for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award. They were two of 16 nominees for the award, chosen from a field of 250 actors.
- B.F.A. production design student Tanya Littlefield was the winner of the Stage Management Fellowship. She will compete at the KCACTF 2013 national event in Washington, D.C.
- M.F.A. dramatic writing student Nate Harpel submitted two award-winning plays. His 10-minute play will be given a full production at the 2014 KCACTF regional festival, and his full-length play will compete at the national level in 2014.
- B.F.A. dramatic writing student Tyler Stuart's 10-minute play, an entry in the 2012 competition, was given a full production in the 2013 competition.

Katherine Absher was named the
2013 Liz Claiborne Design Scholar by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The prestigious $25,000 award is presented each year to the student who best addresses through fashion the lifestyle and needs of women, as judged by a panel of fashion industry experts.

Build a Chair: America's Design Competition." The top 50 designs, including Builteman's and Bowerman's design, "Chair for Battery Park," were selected by a world-renowned jury from more than 1,500 designers from 15 countries across the Americas. The winner will be announced in November; voting for the competition is open until October. The winning design will be installed in Battery Park in New York City. Huang wins competition, $10,000 prize
M.F.A. furniture design students Kai-ning Huang and Francy Jones, along with B.F.A. furniture design students Paul D'Errico and Christian Dunbar, were among eight finalists chosen in the 2012-2013 Bienenstock Furniture Design Competition. Huang won first place in the competition and received a $10,000 prize.

Hodges, Crawford make surprising discoveries
B.F.A. historic preservation students
Jordan Hodges and
Whitney Crawford have made surprising discoveries about Savannah's oldest church organ. Created by renowned organ maker Henry Erban, it was given to First African Baptist Church, the oldest African-American Baptist congregation in the United States, in 1888. The students' research was done as part of their Material Culture course and will support the congregation's fundraising efforts for the organ's restoration.

Papadopoulos, Hollrith are Disney finalists
M.A. production design student Elisabeth Papadopoulos and M.A. industrial design student Nathan Hollrith have been selected as finalists in the Walt Disney Imagineering ImagiNations competition. The competition challenged students to propose and design a unique entertainment experience for a city without a Disney presence. One of six finalist teams, they now have the opportunity to present their proposed design to Imagineering executives, interview for internships and compete for a cash prize.

B.F.A. interior design student David Paull will be appearing in "Making it in America," a documentary airing over the course of a month on CNN and Headline News. The documentary features Compost Wheels, the environmentally minded company Paull founded in 2012, and also follows Paull as he aids a local family in its challenge to live waste-free for a month.

While an intern at ad agency Brunner, SCAD M.F.A. motion media design student Mina Valizadeh developed the idea, design, storyboarding, illustration and animation for a commercial for the Hollywood Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The project won a 2013 ADDY Award.

Blunk and Thorla in "Much Ado About Nothing"
Performing arts students Austin Blunk and Karen Thorla will be a part of the production of "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Cleveland, Ohio and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise. Blunk has been cast as a member of the Watch and will be the understudy for the role of Claudio; Thorla has been cast as Ursula.

Erin McNeil's paper included in new book
M.F.A. photography student Erin McNeil had her paper, "The Trajectory of Reflexivity," accepted for publication in the forthcoming book, "The Reflexive Photographer" (MuseumsEtc, anticipated 2013). Edited by critical and contextual studies scholars, her contribution will address the shifts in reflexivity from early mechanics of motion to photographic processes to current digital media practices.

Students receive awards at theater festival
Six SCAD students received awards at the 2013 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, Region IV competition in Albany, Georgia.
- M.F.A. performing arts student Alex Kanter took home the Best Director of the New Play Program award.
- B.F.A. performing arts student Anne-Marie Trabolsi won the Best Classical Actress award. She and M.F.A. performing arts student Cody Murphy were finalists for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award. They were two of 16 nominees for the award, chosen from a field of 250 actors.
- B.F.A. production design student Tanya Littlefield was the winner of the Stage Management Fellowship. She will compete at the KCACTF 2013 national event in Washington, D.C.

Papadopoulos, Hollrith are Disney finalists

The competition challenged students to propose and design a unique entertainment experience for a city without a Disney presence. One of six finalist teams, they now have the opportunity to present their proposed design to Imagineering executives, interview for internships and compete for a cash prize.

Cynthia Harris interns at Atlas Media Corp.
B.F.A. sound design student Cynthia Harris worked as a postproduction intern this past summer at Atlas Media Corp. in New York City. She learned postproduction techniques that included adding sound cues, editing and dubbing footage. In addition to her internship, she worked as a production assistant on the set of the TV series "Stalked" on Investigation Discovery and closed captioned for Travel Channel's "Hotel Impossible" and Disney's "Frenemies."
