Rossell helps neighborhood get designation
Architectural history professor
E.G. Daves Rossell has been helping members of the Pine Gardens Neighborhood Association get their Savannah, Georgia, neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The effort, which has spanned more than a decade, will culminate with a review of their application by the national register at the state and national levels, with the goal of permanently adding the World War II-era neighborhood to the register. Ryan Bacha awarded Teaching Excellence Award
Architecture professor Ryan Bacha has been awarded the Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award. This annual award recognizes an outstanding faculty member at a Georgia Independent College Association member institution who has made outstanding contributions to undergraduate education, student learning and campus life.

Stephanie Jackson (M.A., historic preservation, 2007) have formed
GoDesign. They partnered with other nonprofit organizations to build a
school in Ethiopia that will serve 60 children in the village of Dilla. Architecture professors
Ryan Bacha and
Melanie Parker serve on the board of directors for GoDesign.

Arthur J. DiFuria publishes review
Art history professor Arthur J. DiFuria, Ph.D., published his review of "Drama and Devotion: Heemskerck's Ecce Homo Altarpiece from Warsaw," the catalogue accompanying the exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum. DiFuria is completing a comprehensive review of the extensive group of drawings prepared by Maerten van Heemskerck during his time in Rome. DiFuria previously received a Presidential Fellowship to advance his research devoted to the Flemish artist.

Budzynski presents at Oregon conference
Art history professor Scott Budzynski will present his research "Narrative Space and Neorealist Milan" at the American Association of Italian Studies Annual Conference in Eugene, Oregon. Budzynski will join leading scholars for a panel devoted to Italian cinema. His work contributes to courses devoted to picturing the modern and contemporary city.

Tyler Akers to pursue M.F.A. degree
Tyler Akers (B.F.A., art history, 2012) will attend the M.F.A. program in art criticism and writing at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Professors Alexandria Pierce and Susan Falls mentored Akers during the completion of his studies in new media and his thesis, "The Transurban Condition: An Examination of the Political Works of Hussein Chalayan and Lucy Orta."

Charity Troy to pursue master's degree
Charity Troy (B.F.A., art history, 2011) will attend the master's degree program in art history at Syracuse University. Troy graduated cum laude from SCAD and completed her thesis, "Competition between Leonardo and Michelangelo: Florence, 1501-0159," with professor James Janson.

Professor Jackson publishes essay
Timothy Jackson, Ph.D., professor of art history, published his essay "Cybernecology: Liberation Aesthetics and the Public Sphere" in The Virtual Transformation of the Public Sphere: Knowledge, Politics, Identity (Routledge, 2013). The essay follows his presentation at the College Art Association annual meeting and his exploration of the theme at a conference in Chandigarh, India.

Holly Goldstein, Ph.D., professor of art history, published "St. Augustine's 'Slave Market': A Visual History" in the interdisciplinary journal Southern Spaces as a feature in its series "Landscapes and Ecologies of the U.S. South." Professor Goldstein unpacked the complicated history of an iconic site through its shifts from a place of oppression and injustice to tourism.

Art history professor Gregory Caicco, Ph.D. contributed his paper "And I Worked With My Hands': Critical Design as Poetics" to the Universities Art Association of Canada (UAAC-AAUC) Conference held in Montréal, Quebec Nov. 1-3, 2012. Professor Caicco's research proposes a set of strategies for architects and designers working on the other side of modernity.

Khoi Vo participates in Houston exhibition
Interior design professor Khoi Vo was selected to participate in "Houston Interior Designers: How Texans Touched the World," a juried exhibition of work from top Texas interior design firms, organized by American Institute of Architects and the Houston chapter of the International Interior Design Association. As a panel member, Vo discussed the future of architecture and design education, shared information about the SCAD School of Building Arts, and presented work from the Collaborative Learning Center.

Interior Design Educators Council's national conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, as a panel discussion leader. His topic was the codification of green building practices and the interior design profession's role in shaping future green building standards. Boggs, the grants committee chair for the organization, coordinates the review, approval and administration of grants funded by IDEC.

- The Georgia TESOL held in Atlanta on Oct. 25-26, 2012. His presentation was on the advantages and disadvantages of working with homgenous and heterogenous classes and strategies to increase learning.

Lough to lecture at Flannery O’Connor home
Writing professor James Lough will present a lecture at the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home, 207 E. Charlton St., in Savannah on Sunday, April 21, at 4 p.m. During the lecture, titled "New York's Notorious Chelsea Hotel: An Oral History," Lough will share excerpts from his forthcoming book on the Chelsea Hotel and discuss the process of interviewing former residents and compiling and organizing the interviews into a single narrative. This lecture is part of the 2013 Gulfstream Spring Lecture Series.
