Naughty Dog recognizes Liu and Lenz

Philip Liu, M.F.A. visual effects student and SCAD alumnus (B.A., digital media, 2011) and Joseph Lenz, M.A. visual effects student and SCAD alumnus (B.F.A., visual effects, 2011) were recognized by the game company Naughty Dog for game art created submitted to a Fan Art Competition based on their upcoming game "The Last of Us." This project was created in an independent study with Luis Cataldi, chair of the SCAD interactive design and game development. See full game art.

Craig Stevens receives educator prize

SCAD professor Craig Stevens, a photographer, printmaker and educator, has received the inaugural $5,000 Susan Carr Educator Prize from the American Society of Media Photographers. Stevens has taught photography at SCAD for 25 years.

C&R Press publishes Chris Bundy book

"Baby You're a Rich Man," a book by writing professor Chris Bundy, has been published by C&R Press. The book, illustrated by SCAD alumnus Max Currie (B.F.A., sequential art, 2012), follows the story of Ken Richman, a down-on-his-luck, B-level variety star on Japanese television who is forced to go into hiding when he becomes the target of an escaped prisoner. "Baby You're a Rich Man" will be released in May.

M.A. furniture design student Laney Builteman (B.F.A., interior design, 2009) and M.F.A. industrial design student Jamie Bowerman (B.F.A., graphic design, 2004; M.A., industrial design, 2012) are finalists in the Battery Park Conservancy's "Build a Chair: America's Design Competition." The top 50 designs, including Builteman's and Bowerman's design, "Chair for Battery Park," were selected by a world-renowned jury from more than 1,500 designers from 15 countries across the Americas. The winner will be announced in November; voting for the competition is open until October. The winning design will be installed in Battery Park in New York City. Art history professor Arthur J. DiFuria, Ph.D., published his review of "Drama and Devotion: Heemskerck's Ecce Homo Altarpiece from Warsaw," the catalogue accompanying the exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum. DiFuria is completing a comprehensive review of the extensive group of drawings prepared by Maerten van Heemskerck during his time in Rome. DiFuria previously received a Presidential Fellowship to advance his research devoted to the Flemish artist.

Writing professor James Lough will present a lecture at the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home, 207 E. Charlton St., in Savannah on Sunday, April 21, at 4 p.m. During the lecture, titled "New York's Notorious Chelsea Hotel: An Oral History," Lough will share excerpts from his forthcoming book on the Chelsea Hotel and discuss the process of interviewing former residents and compiling and organizing the interviews into a single narrative. This lecture is part of the 2013 Gulfstream Spring Lecture Series.

As a panel member, Vo discussed the future of architecture and design education, shared information about the SCAD School of Building Arts, and presented work from the Collaborative Learning Center.

Interior design professor Charles Boggs attended the Interior Design Educators Council's national conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, as a panel discussion leader. His topic was the codification of green building practices and the interior design profession's role in shaping future green building standards. Boggs, the grants committee chair for the organization, coordinates the review, approval and administration of grants funded by IDEC.

B.F.A. historic preservation students Jordan Hodges and Whitney Crawford have made surprising discoveries about Savannah's oldest church organ. Created by renowned organ maker Henry Erban, it was given to First African Baptist Church, the oldest African-American Baptist congregation in the United States, in 1888. The students' research was done as part of their Material Culture course and will support the congregation's fundraising efforts for the organ's restoration. Read more about the students' discovery.

M.F.A. dramatic writing student Nate Harpel was selected as one of four finalists to compete in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival National Competition in Washington, D.C. He has been invited to participate in the KCACTF's residency program, which will culminate with a performance of his 10-minute play, "Like Pigeons," in April 2013 at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater.
