Hodges, Crawford make surprising discoveries

B.F.A. historic preservation students Jordan Hodges and Whitney Crawford have made surprising discoveries about Savannah's oldest church organ. Created by renowned organ maker Henry Erban, it was given to First African Baptist Church, the oldest African-American Baptist congregation in the United States, in 1888. The students' research was done as part of their Material Culture course and will support the congregation's fundraising efforts for the organ's restoration. Read more about the students' discovery.
Roy scholar at New Bedford Whaling Museum

Doreen Roy (M.F.A., historic preservation, 2005, Savannah) completed a field internship at the Davenport House Museum in Savannah, Georgia, performing a condition assessment of the museum's windows. He accepted the position of Scholar in Residence at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

The Keku Cannery National Historic Landmark Preservation Plan by Robert Meinhardt (M.A., historic preservation, 2011) has been adopted by the Organized Village of Kake, the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office and the Secretary of the Interior, thereby establishing the first Tribal Historic Preservation Program in Alaska. Meinhardt founded the consulting firm, True North Sustainable Development Solutions LLC.

The grant will fund an historic structures report documenting the George Stoppel Farm, a group of 1850s structures included on a 160-acre site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lim to be session speaker, panelist

SCAD Professor Jong Hyun Lim was invited as a session speaker and panelist for conferences in Naples, Italy, and in Isle of Man, United Kingdom. He presented a field project on the Montgomery historic community focusing on heritage recording and documentation techniques as well as community involvement and planning. The project itself is still under progress through SCAD historic preservation classes. So far, more than 50 students have been involved in the project.
Students prepare rehab report for 1910 house

Under the instruction of SCAD Professor James Abraham, 17 historic preservation graduate students prepared a report that led to the rehabilitation of the two-story, vernacular-style house built in 1910 for Herbert Dunlevie of the Dunlevie Lumber Company, one the first working sawmills in the State of Georgia.

Historic preservation hosts two-day meeting

In April 2011, the SCAD historic preservation department hosted a two-day meeting of the College of Fellows of the Association for Preservation Technology International in Savannah, Georgia. Presentations were held in the chapel of the SCAD Clarence Thomas Center for Historic Preservation. Professor Thomas Taylor, a member of the College of Fellows, invited the group to hold its retreat in Savannah.
Pinkerton attanes public history conference

SCAD Professor Connie Pinkerton attended the National Council on Public History conference in Pensacola, Florida, in April 2011. She participated in a panel that presented a topic titled "The 'Public' of Undergraduate Historic Preservation Education." The panel focused on the successes and challenges of undergraduate historic preservation programs in the United States.
