Chad R. Newsom (M.A., cinema studies, 2008) completed his Ph.D. in English and film studies from the University of Florida, where he studied film under Robert B. Ray. He received full tuition, a stipend and a supplemental Alumni Fellowship to support his studies. He taught lower- and upper-division classes in both film studies and composition, and was awarded the English department's "Excellence in Teaching" in 2010. He completed a dissertation about film criticism, close reading, and the films of Douglas Sirk.

Georgia State University accepted Mary Feld (M.A., cinema studies, 2011) into one of six available positions in the Moving Image Studies Ph.D. program for the 2011-12 academic year. She received both a graduate teaching assistantship and a graduate research assistantship. She teaches film aesthetics and analysis and is beginning her doctoral dissertation.

The University of Florida granted graduate cinema studies student Chad Newsom a full-tuition scholarship to enroll in its doctoral program in cinema studies. Newsom will get to study under renowned film scholar Robert Ray.
