SCAD industrial design students land positions in Hong Kong with technology company VTech

One student hired, two others granted internships as result of design presentations

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Following 10 weeks of collaboration with VTech, a world leader in cordless telephones and electronic learning products, Savannah College of Art and Design industrial design students Ishmael Adams, Jesse Bizzoco and Austin Brown were offered positions with the Hong Kong-based technology company. The positions with VTech resulted from the students' final design presentations on May 15 in Hong Kong.

Adams accepted a full-time position at the industrial design department of VTech's Telecommunication Products business in Hong Kong. Bizzoco and Brown, both juniors, were offered six-month paid internships that will include housing and transportation costs. Adams and Brown are expected to begin their respective positions in the fall; Bizzoco will arrive in the winter after completing her last quarter at SCAD.

VTech senior design manager David Waterman made the announcements during a dinner reception in Hong Kong on May 23. All 15 industrial design students who participated in the spring quarter project were in attendance, along with industrial design professors Peter Fossick and Joel Wittkamp.

"I would like to congratulate Ishmael, Jesse and Austin on their outstanding work, which impressed us in many ways and enabled them to shine in what was a very competitive field," Waterman said. "We look forward to welcoming them back to Hong Kong later this year where they can begin to work on their product ideas and bring them to life."

This was the first time a group of SCAD students traveled overseas to present before an international client; it also was the first partnership project between SCAD and VTech. The project combined two theory classes and one studio class, all taught by Fossick during SCAD's spring quarter.

The students spent two weeks in Hong Kong from May 9-23. In addition to the VTech presentations, the students met with top leadership at the design studios of other major Hong Kong industrial companies including the Gold Peak Group and Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd., touring their factory sites in Shenzhen, China.

VTech joins a growing list of industry partnerships with companies including JCB Excavators, Hobie Cat and Rubbermaid.

"Clearly, the Savannah College of Art and Design is among the best in its field, turning out students with both a theoretical and practical grasp of the business of industrial design," said Waterman. "Although our collaboration with the college has only just begun, I feel sure that it will go from strength to strength, giving students useful hands-on experience and providing VTech ready access to some promising design talent."
